Castello Longhi - De Paolis and the Hanging Gardens
An official document from AD 962 provides the first evidence of the existence of Castello Longhi - De Paolis. The complex initially served as a military fortress and papal prison before becoming the seat of the Longhi family. This sequence comprises several clearly distinguishable chapters: military architecture, prison and family residence are all part of the history of the same castle.
Among the castle’s notable historical features are the Hanging Gardens of Castello Longhi - De Paolis. They were created after Marchese Giovanni Longhi acquired the ancient Rocca in 1588 and completed in the first half of the 17th century. This gives you a broad historical perspective when planning your trip: the castle has been documented since the early Middle Ages, while the gardens reveal a later phase of its design.
Churches with Medieval and Baroque Traces
The Chiesa Collegiata della Santissima Maria Annunziata dates back to the 12th century. In 1781, Pope Pius VI elevated it to a collegiate church. Inside, there is an Annunciation painting created by Buttaragi in 1786. In the main nave, you can also see a fresco depicting the death of Pope Celestine V. The construction period, ecclesiastical elevation and the two artworks offer different ways to explore architecture, religious history and art.
The Chiesa di San Gaugerico also dates back to an older architectural layer. It was built in the first half of the 14th century using the structural elements of an older church. Its Gothic portal has a pointed arch and several mouldings. These precise features make the church particularly interesting for visitors who wish to observe historic building techniques and the transition between older and later parts of the building.
Lago di Canterno and Protected Landscape
Lago di Canterno lies within the territory of Fumone and extends across the municipalities of Ferentino, Fiuggi, Fumone and Trivigliano. The karst lake covers approximately 1.1 km², has a circumference of 5 km and a variable depth of about 15 to 25 m. It is part of a regional nature reserve established to protect a landscape of significance and a species-rich area with flora and fauna.
The arrival of wetland birds such as grey herons, moorhens and purple herons has been recorded at Lago di Canterno. The lake therefore represents not only a distinctive landscape feature but also a natural environment where different habitats and bird species come together. If you would like to combine culture and nature on a single trip, this area provides a separate focus alongside historic Fumone.
Trails for Different Day Plans
The four-hour Sentiero antico Rivellino follows the former fortified access route to Castello Longhi - De Paolis. A six-hour nature trail runs along the shores of Lago di Canterno through the Oasi Naturale „Lago di Canterno“ and is intended to guide visitors through the area with the greatest possible safety. The different durations help you compare the planned scope of a hike: one trail focuses on the former access route to the fortress, while the other follows the lakeshore and nature reserve.
History as a Living Representation
Castri Fumonis Ludi is a historical reenactment in Fumone commemorating Henry VI’s attempted attack on the fortress of Fumone in AD 1186. During Castri Fumonis Ludi, Fumone is transformed into a medieval village where different factions stage armed confrontations. The event therefore places not only a single historical incident at the centre but also combines it with a depiction of the site as a medieval village scene.
Panata at the Patron Saint Celebrations
A distinct expression of local character can be seen during the patron saint celebrations in honour of Saint Sebastian. Panata is distributed and eaten in the municipal Grottoni. The Grottoni and the communal meal are an integral part of the festivities described here, adding a culinary element to the historical and landscape impressions.
You can find other destinations in the same destination area with Filettino, Strangolagalli, Sant'elia Fiumerapido, Acuto, Alvito, Ausonia, Pico and Campoli Appennino.
