Esperia between Karst and the Aurunci Mountains

Esperia lies in a rocky landscape at the foot of Monte Cecubo and within the Parco Naturale dei Monti Aurunci. In the historic center of Esperia stands the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore e San Filippo Neri, built around 1200. It preserves the relics of San Clino Abate and features a 16th-century altarpiece attributed to Taddeo Zuccari. This historical picture is complemented by the Palazzo Baronale Spinelli in Esperia Superiore, whose history can be traced back to 1470. The Castello di Roccaguglielma was built around 1103 by the Norman knight Guglielmo di Glossavilla.

Karst Landscapes and Dinosaur Tracks

The Museo del Carsismo in Palazzo Spinelli is dedicated to the karst landscapes of the Monti Aurunci. Exhibits include finds, explanatory panels and interactive installations. The museum also contains a large cast of the dinosaur tracks discovered in San Martino near Esperia. The site includes more than 40 tracks from approximately three species dating from around 120 to 140 million years ago. These dinosaur tracks are the oldest dinosaur tracks discovered in Lazio. Admission to the Museo del Carsismo is free.

Hiking, Spirituality and Regional Products

The Cammino di San Filippo Neri leads to Esperia Superiore, ancient Roccaguglielma. The Monte Petrella – Anello da Cisterna Polleca circular route passes through the forests of the Monti Aurunci.
