Serrone between the Old Town and Mountain Landscapes

Serrone lies along the Prenestina-Casilina route of the Via Francigena del Sud, linking historic paths with a distinctive mountain town. In the old town, stone-paved lanes, ramps and steps lead through the village. At several points, views open out over the valley of the Sacco River. Churches with a Long History

The Church of San Pietro Apostolo has three naves. Its first documented mention dates from 12 May 1198. Inside, it has a choir loft with an organ built between 1648 and 1659. The exact date of its first mention and the surviving organ provide the church with two different historical points of reference: a documented beginning and a specific furnishing from the 17th century.

The Church of San Quirico is also one of Serrone’s notable historic landmarks. It was built in 1600 for the Franciscan Zoccolanti monks. During a walk through the village, you can also see the Lesca’s Cyclopean walls. In the Parco della Rocca di Torre Colonna, traces of the new fortification, including the Torre Colonna, are still preserved today. These sites lead from ecclesiastical history to the architectural remains of the fortifications.

Theatre, Nativity Scene and Local Identity

The Museo dei Costumi Teatrali presents 20th-century Italian theatre in two exhibition rooms. The original costumes include pieces worn by Eduardo de Filippo and Vittorio Gassman. A visit to the museum therefore focuses on the history of Italian theatre and on concrete testimonies of major stage personalities, without restricting you to an exclusively architectural tour.

A different cultural scene emerges with Serrone’s ethnographic Nativity scene. In the lanes of the old town, it includes more than 100 life-size statues dressed in typical Ciociaria clothing. The display therefore uses not just a single interior space, but also the streets of the historic centre and its regional clothing tradition as visible elements of the Nativity scene.

Monte Scalambra: Hiking and Air Sports

Monte Scalambra offers several launch sites for paragliding and hang-gliding. Tandem paragliding flights are also possible on the mountain. The route to the summit of Monte Scalambra takes about two hours. The trails on Monte Scalambra also include sections of the European long-distance trail E1. This means that the mountain brings together visitors planning an ascent, travelling along a long-distance trail or wishing to experience Serrone from the perspective of air sports.

Cycle Path on a Former Railway Line

La Forma has a large, developed landing area for paragliding. A 20-kilometre cycle path also leads from La Forma to Fiuggi. The cycle path between La Forma and Fiuggi follows the route of the former Fiuggi–Rome railway line. For planning your day, this section offers a different way of experiencing the landscape than climbing Monte Scalambra: the route connects La Forma and Fiuggi along a historic former railway line.

Wine Cellars and Conversations with Winemakers

Serrone’s local character also includes its wine cellars. Visitors can tour them and talk to older and younger winemakers.
