Giuliano di Roma combines volcanic geological history, sacred buildings, a historic center, and regional cuisine. The town thus offers different ways to experience a journey: trails and landscapes, churches and squares, a museum dedicated to geology, and local traditions give a stay a distinct character.

Volcanic Landscapes and Historic Trails

The Cammino della Regina Camilla is an approximately 185-kilometer circular trail that passes through Giuliano di Roma. It follows ancient transhumance routes, mule tracks, historic paths, and pilgrimage routes. The landscape itself also tells the story of the geological past: the Valle del Fosso di Monte Acuto contains Pleistocene pyroclastic deposits of pumice, scoria, lapilli, and lava fragments.

The hill on which Giuliano di Roma stands was the summit of a significant eruptive center and is one of the 20 eruptive centers in the central Valle Latina. Today, it is an inactive volcanic summit. In Valcatora, a lava flow emerges that is associated with the effusive activity of the Giuliano di Roma eruptive center in the Ernici volcanic area. The Monte Siserno geological landscape has the ZPS IT6030043 “Monti Lepini” special protection area as its associated protected area. Giuliano di Roma overlooks the Valle dell’Amaseno.

Churches, Towers, and Squares

The historic center of Giuliano di Roma is a pedestrian zone reached by narrow lanes leading uphill. The Collegiata Santa Maria Maggiore is an 18th-century Baroque church and has held the title “Collegiata Insigne” since 1737. Its 18th-century wooden choir is currently awaiting restoration. The detached bell tower is 30 meters high and was originally the keep of Castello Colonna.

The Santuario Madonna della Speranza was built in the second half of the 18th century and consecrated by the bishop of Ferentino in 1762. The image of the Madonna della Speranza dates from the 16th century. An unexploded bomb from May 1944 is kept in the presbytery.

The Chiesa di San Rocco stands in the center of Borgo Vittorio Emanuele and was originally dedicated to San Sebastiano. The work was completed in August 1863; the church was subsequently reconsecrated. In the center of the piazza in Borgo Vittorio Emanuele stands the Fontana del Fauno, a bronze fountain.

The Chiesa di San Biagio also reaches far back into history: the year 1091 recorded on it commemorates an initial restoration. The only surviving fresco dates from the 1692 decoration and depicts the martyr San Sosio. The very old statue of San Biagio is carried in a procession from the Chiesa di San Biagio on the last Saturday in August; today, it is located in the sacristy of Santa Maria Maggiore.

Museum and Local Traditions

The MUVE – Museo del Vulcanismo Ernico is located in the heart of Giuliano di Roma’s historic center, in the Palazzo Brettagna, and extends over three floors. The tour leads through various thematic areas and provides visitors with knowledge about volcanism and geology.

During the feast of San Biagio, San Biagio oil is blessed, with which the priest subsequently anoints the throats of the faithful. San Biagio is celebrated on February 3 and in August with processions. Local culinary culture includes “Maccaruni cugli feri”: hollow spaghetti shaped with the help of an “iron.” The traditional Sagra dei “Maccaruni Cugli Feri” takes place in Giuliano di Roma and is a festival celebrating this typical local dish.
