Mountain landscapes and springs

Monte Cotento, at 2,015 metres, towers above the settlement of Filettino. Another distinctive landscape feature is the ZSC site IT6050029 Sorgenti dell'Aniene. It includes priority habitats as well as endemic and threatened species, including wolves, Salamandrina salamanders and newts. The spring is located in Filettino, in the vicinity of Lago del Pertuso; the lake and dam, on the other hand, belong to the municipality of Trevi nel Lazio. This different municipal allocation is important when navigating the area around the body of water.

The Belvedere del Cotardo is a viewing terrace overlooking mountains, valleys, forests and Filettino. For those interested in nature, the “Gli Animali del Bosco” exhibition in the visitor centre of Parco dei Simbruini complements this landscape impression. It illustrates the lives of the park’s animals and thus offers a distinct cultural approach to the region’s natural environment.

Hiking trails to Monte Viglio

The Percorso 694b hiking trail begins in the centre of Filettino and leads towards Monte Viglio. The summit is 2,156 metres high and is the highest peak of the Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini. From Filettino, Monte Viglio can be reached via trail 694b; the CAI classifies this trail as difficulty level EE. This allows tour planning to be based on a specific starting point and the stated classification.

From Le sorgenti dell'Aniene - Fiumata, the trail on the left leads for approximately 4 kilometres and over an elevation gain of about 170 metres to the slopes of Colle delle Fontane at 1,269 metres. The trail on the right follows the Torrente Riglioso to the vicinity of Fonte della Radica at 1,169 metres and is approximately 3 kilometres long. The two different trail lengths provide a clear basis if you would like to organise your day according to distance and destination area.

Churches and sacred art

The Chiesa di San Nicola is the oldest church in Filettino. It stands outside the town walls, near the municipal cemetery. Filettino is also home to the Chiesa S. Bernardino, below the current seat of the municipal administration. Its apse preserves frescoes from the second half of the 15th century.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni contains a fresco from the Umbrian-Marche school dating to around 1500. It depicts the enthroned Virgin Mary holding the infant Jesus. The name Chiesa di San Nicola is associated with the Abbazia dei SS. Nicola e Giovanni; fragments of frescoes from 1220 depicting the Last Judgement and the twelve Apostles are preserved there.

The Museo parrocchiale di arte sacra „Don Alessandro De Sanctis“ is also located in the Chiesa di San Bernardino. The objects on display there include furnishings, liturgical vestments, works of art and liturgical silver. The sacred sites and collections thus offer various chronological and artistic approaches to Filettino’s history.

History, everyday life and local traditions

The Mura Saracene are located 3 kilometres outside Filettino, on the road between Trevi and Filettino. The wall is 37 metres long and up to 7 metres high at its highest point; its construction is unmistakably Roman. The Parco Naturale Regionale dei Monti Simbruini also contains 19th-century boundary stones. They marked the former border between the Papal States, to which Filettino belonged, and the Kingdom of Naples.

The Museo dell’Arte e Civiltà contadina „Angela Cotoloni“ is located on the first floor of Palazzo Graziani. It displays objects, documents and evidence relating to everyday life from the late 19th century to the first half of the 20th century. During the Infiorata del Corpus Domini, flower carpets depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and the Virgin Mary are usually created in Filettino. Alongside buildings and museums, religious visual traditions are therefore also central to the town.

Campo Staffi and practical information

Campo Staffi is a ski resort in Lazio and has two cross-country skiing circuits with a combined length of 10 kilometres. Filettino is connected to Campo Staffi and the nearby towns of Trevi nel Lazio and Altipiani di Arcinazzo by COTRAL services and a shuttle service operated by A.T.L.
