The Castello Ducale and Thomas Aquinas

The Castello Ducale dates from the late 10th century. Its pentagonal tower and the square Torre Maschia tower make the complex architecturally distinctive. The castle is associated with an episode from the life of Saint Thomas Aquinas: he was imprisoned in a cell in the castle from 1244 to 1245. From the 16th century onward, the prison was converted into a chapel. The castle thus brings together towers, a cell and a chapel as tangible architectural and historical details.

Churches steeped in history and art

Santa Maria della Valle also brings together several layers of history. The church was built in the 16th century and, at the request of Pope Clement XIV, elevated to an important collegiate church. It houses a 17th-century oil painting by Cavalier d'Arpino. The door reveals a more recent leap in time: it was created in 1974 by the sculptor Tommaso Gismondi. Here, the construction period, artwork and sculptural detail are therefore equally important for understanding the church.

Another distinctive feature is San Pietro de Arenula. On 20 July 1028, the site served as a meeting place for the founding of a congregation of canons. The floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross and forms an unusual octagonal building layout. At San Pietro de Arenula, the history of its foundation and its architectural form come together in a single sacred building.

Waterways on the outskirts of the town

Beyond its architectural history, the landscape follows its own lines. The rocky hill of Monte San Giovanni Campano culminates in the Castello Ducale; at the same time, the town is situated in the Monti Ernici. The Canale fountain complex has three large arches and three outlets. The Riuccio stream flows from the Mendrella spring to the Amaseno River. The waterways include an old watermill; at Pozzillo, a small waterfall plunges into the Amaseno. At Pozzillo, the waterfall meets the Amaseno; the old watermill also belongs to this water landscape and complements the springs and stream scenery.

Pilgrimage trails and arrival

For longer-distance routes, Monte San Giovanni Campano is located along the Via Francigena del Sud and is one of the municipalities in Lazio through which the Cammino di San Benedetto passes. If you are arriving by car from Rome or Naples, you can reach the town via the A1, the Ferentino exit and the Ferentino–Sora expressway. The road route via Ferentino thus connects with two independent pilgrimage routes: the Via Francigena del Sud and the Cammino di San Benedetto. This allows you to consider cultural sites, waterways and pilgrimage routes as separate interests when planning your trip.

The town's historical diversity also includes Casina Valentini, where 29 Garibaldini found refuge.
