Alvito between the fortress and the mountainside

Alvito lies on the slopes of Monte Morrone. Above the Alvito plain stands Castello Cantelmo, an old fortress on a hill. Together with the historic centre, this contrast between hillside, plain and fortified structure shapes the character of the town. The centre is made up of small squares and very narrow, mostly stepped lanes. From the lower town of Alvito, an approximately 50-minute walk follows an old paved path to Castello. In addition, the CAI SI P01 route leads from Pescasseroli via Alvito to Loc. Trichiano. The landscape also includes Fossa Maiura, a karst depression approximately 100 metres deep. Monte Morrone, the hilltop fortress and the karst depression each add their own distinctive feature to the area around Alvito.

Churches and historic buildings

The churches and palazzi also give Alvito a richly varied architectural character. The Teatro comunale di Alvito is located in the former Sala del Trono of Palazzo Gallio, which is also called Palazzo Ducale. The Collegiata Insigne di San Simeone was consecrated on 22 April 1574. Its bell tower is one of the signal towers of Alvito's medieval town walls. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Campo bears traces of Byzantine frescoes. The Chiesa di Santa Teresa is a Baroque church with a central-plan layout. The Chiesa di San Biagio stands immediately outside Alvito's town walls. The Chiesa della SS. Trinità al Peschio is probably a 12th-century church and is one of the oldest churches in Alvito.

Among the secular buildings, various details catch the eye. Palazzo Panicali has two dovecotes. The main rooms of Palazzo Mazzenga feature painted wooden ceilings, stucco decorations and coffered ceilings; its floors often retain old tiles. Palazzo Monaco still preserves its original furnishings within its 19th-century architectural appearance. Thus, Alvito's architectural range extends from medieval and Baroque churches to preserved interior features in historic palazzi.

Historic routes and views

Further connections to the town's former structure can be recognised around San Biagio. The portico of the Chiesa di San Biagio is located near a medieval town gate on the former road linking Alvito and Vicalvi. The square in front of the Chiesa della SS. Trinità al Peschio was the starting point of the old road to the castle. Just a few steps from the Chiesa di Santa Teresa, there is a panoramic view over the Val di Comino. These points combine historical orientation with an appreciation of the landscape, without reducing Alvito to a single attraction.

Pane Ammollo and local tradition

The Festa del Pan a Moll is part of the local food culture. It takes place every year in Alvito to celebrate Pane Ammollo. The festival complements the churches, fortress and palace architecture with a culinary connection and makes clear that the town's history is visible not only in its buildings but also in recurring local traditions.
