Fontechiari: History, Sacred Art and Festivals
Accommodation in Fontechiari
Fontechiari can be discovered through its distinctive location, historic religious buildings and lively festival traditions.
Rocky Spur, Valley and River
The historic centre of Fontechiari is located on a rocky spur above the valley. Another geographical reference is the Rio di Fontechiari: it crosses the territory of Fontechiari and flows into the Fibreno River near Ponte Tapino. Fontechiari thus combines the elevated location of the centre with the connection to the Rio di Fontechiari and its confluence near Ponte Tapino.
Historic Churches with Distinctive Details
The Chiesa dei SS. Giovanni Battista ed Evangelista has a rectangular Baroque-style layout with three naves, six columns and eight arches. The first records concerning it date from 1308–1310. The church also has an organ built by Cesare Catarinozzi in 1785. The 1785 organ therefore belongs to a later period than the first records from 1308–1310. For visitors interested in culture, this building thus brings together early local history, Baroque spatial design and a precisely dated instrument.
The Santuario della Madonna dei Fratelli also offers an insight into the sacred art of Fontechiari. The painting of the Madonna dei Fratelli is the work of an unknown painter from Lazio dating from the 17th century. The entrance portal of the Santuario is made of local stone and dates from the late 18th century. The portal therefore belongs to a later period than the painting, whose creation is dated to the 17th century. At the Eremo di Sant’Onofrio, there are exterior paintings depicting saints and sacred symbols from 1517–1520. The Eremo itself consists of a long cave divided into three rooms.
The Cimitero Napoleonico and the Ospitale
The Cimitero Napoleonico was built in 1838 in the hamlet of S. Onofrio in accordance with the Edict of Saint-Cloud proclaimed by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806. The Edict of Saint-Cloud therefore predates the construction of the site in 1838. The site is built of brick and features concentric circles as well as areas separated according to rank. It is considered the only known example of a Napoleonic cemetery in central Italy. The Ospitale served a different historical function: it was a place where travellers could wait if they arrived in the village after the gates had closed and were initially denied entry.
Festivals between Autumn and Farming Tradition
The Festa dell’Autunno con la Maxitorta reached its 19th edition in 2024. The “Fontechiari: Tradizione e Storia Contadina” festival has reached more than fifteen editions. The Festa dell’Autunno con la Maxitorta and the “Fontechiari: Tradizione e Storia Contadina” festival place different emphasis on autumn, farming tradition and the history of the town.
