Castello di Porciano and its ruins
Castello di Porciano is also known as Castrum Porciani and is an ancient military outpost dating from around the 9th century. It was built before the year 1000 and developed into an important centre for a settlement of the same name. The ruins are located on a hill above Lake Canterno, covered by dense vegetation and situated within the lake's nature reserve. The site therefore combines the history of an early fortification with surroundings clearly shaped by the landscape.
Lake Canterno and Monte Porciano
Lake Canterno lies at the heart of its nature reserve and has a basin of approximately two square kilometres. Its formation is connected with the Pertuso sinkhole: it began to become blocked by material carried in by water, whereupon water accumulated in the depression. Monte Porciano (southern slope) is also part of this protected landscape setting. The area is designated as a Special Conservation Zone (ZSC) and lies entirely within the Lago di Canterno Regional Nature Reserve.
Santuario della Madonna della Stella
Another historical and cultural point of reference is the Santuario della Madonna della Stella. The sanctuary was built in 1695 and is located in the Borgo di Porciano in Ferentino. A fresco recovered from the ruins of an older building was installed in the rebuilt sanctuary. This building had stood higher up on Monte Porciano. During your stay, the history of the area can therefore be explored not only through the castle ruins, but also through sacred architecture and a preserved fresco.
Birdwatching and paths by the lake
Birdwatching opportunities are available at Lake Canterno near Loc. Porciano. Fishing is also widespread locally at the lake. The lakeside path around the Lago di Canterno nature reserve had been partially laid out; its completion as a circular route was planned. For your planning, it is therefore important to distinguish between the path that has already been partially laid out and the planned complete circular route.
The Panarde tradition
As part of the Panarde tradition, more than one thousand homemade loaves of approximately 400 grams are distributed to participants. The loaves are prepared by the Festaroli using flour provided by families. The scale of the event and the communal preparation give this tradition a clear connection to local food culture, complementing Porciano's historical and natural themes with a culinary aspect.
