Sonnino lies on a hill in the Monti Ausoni. Olive groves, holm oaks, oaks and junipers alternate with areas of Mediterranean maquis. An important natural setting in the surrounding area is Campo Soriano, a natural monument in the municipalities of Sonnino and Terracina. There, forests and maquis give way to open clearings and damp rock fissures. Botanical studies have confirmed the presence of numerous scientifically significant species in this area.
One of the area's distinctive natural formations is the Cattedrale: a limestone block approximately 18 meters high, shaped over thousands of years by meteoric water. The landscape therefore offers not only changing vegetation, but also a vivid example of the geological forces that shaped the Monti Ausoni.
Historic center with towers, gates and churches
The historic center of Sonnino is characterized by winding streets, stairways, towers and gates. It lies within five entrance gates: Portella, Porta S. Pietro, Porta S. Giovanni, Porta di Tocco and Porta Riore. Paths within the town walls connect these gates and give the town center its distinctive spatial structure.
The historic buildings include the Castle of Sonnino with its cylindrical tower. It was built around the 9th century on Colle Sant’Angelo by the first lords of Sonnino. The church of San Michele Arcangelo was built around 1210 and was elevated to the status of a sanctuary, the Madonna delle Grazie, in 1947. The collegiate church of San Giovanni was built in 1200.

For visitors who enjoy combining culture with physical activity, the CAI 533 hiking trail begins in the built-up area of Sonnino and ends at Bourbon boundary marker no. 19 on the slopes of Monte Romano. The traditional Festa delle Torce takes place on the eve of Ascension Day as an approximately 30-kilometer procession and hike along the boundaries of Sonnino.

Local cuisine is also part of Sonnino's character. Caciaprete is a handmade pasta from Sonnino's traditional cuisine.
