Canterano’s ancient origins are attested by two Neolithic axes, seven bronze axes discovered in a hoard and kept at the Museo Pigorini in Rome, remains of polygonal walls and Roman funerary inscriptions. This creates a chronological arc from the Neolithic era through the Roman past to the church construction of the 17th century.

Festivals and Community Remembrance

In its festivals, Canterano combines religious tradition, community participation and culinary culture. The Sagra del Tartufo has celebrated Canterano’s truffle every October for more than ten years. The Festa Patrono S. Mauro Abate is Canterano’s patronal festival. A procession during the Festa della Madonna SS. degli Angeli travels almost 2 kilometers from the parish church to the shrine at the old cemetery. Eight members of the confraternity carry the processional structure, and hundreds of people take part each year. The Monumento ai caduti is also a place of remembrance where the community honors the sacrifice of its citizens.

Several local references are useful for practical orientation. The Monumento ai caduti can be accessed from the main road at Piazza Roma in Canterano. You can reach the Mura poligonali via the SP47a main road in the municipality of Canterano. The motorway connection is via the A24 Rome–L’Aquila–Pescara; at the Castel Madama exit, the SP33a, Via Empolitana, leads towards Gerano.
