Bosco Macchia Grande and Caldara

Bosco Macchia Grande covers approximately 580 hectares. Mature and old Turkey oaks dominate this woodland, giving it a clearly recognizable botanical profile. The Bosco lies within the “Comprensorio Tolfetano Cerite Manziate” Special Protection Area (ZPS IT 6030005) and the “Macchia di Manziana” Site of Community Importance (SIC IT 6030008). For nature enthusiasts, the connection between the forest landscape and these two area categories is the focus here.

The Caldara di Manziana Natural Monument is a small crater covering approximately 90 hectares. Its mineral spring releases hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and other gases at a temperature of approximately 20°C. The Natural Monument also includes a birch grove and a wet meadow with the very rare Italian grass Agrostis canina ssp. Monteluccii. The crater, spring and rare vegetation give this place a distinctive focus for nature observation.

Trails through the Landscape

CAI Trail 262B connects Bosco Macchia Grande di Manziana with the Caldara di Manziana Natural Monument. It begins at the entrance to Bosco Macchia Grande in Località Colonie on Via Braccianese (SP493). This provides both a connection between the two natural sites and a specific starting point for orientation.

One route begins at the main entrance to Bosco Macchia Grande in Località Colonie and initially follows Via di Mezza Macchia for approximately 200 meters before turning east. Along the way are the two fountains Testa di Bovo and Fontanile del Bottaccio. The latter is named after the locality of the same name.

History and Local Character

Manziana’s architectural history includes the Chiesa San Giovanni Battista. It was built between 1570 and 1578. Villa Tittoni now provides a cultural setting for concerts, conferences and formal events. At the same time, it reflects centuries of development from medieval and religious origins to a Renaissance phase associated with Mascherino. The church and villa therefore create different points of emphasis between a single construction period and a longer historical development.

In June, the Sagra della Cornuta del Territorio places local free-range Maremma beef at the center of attention. If you would like to include regional cuisine in your trip, this period offers a specific culinary point of reference during your stay.
