Monte Compatri lies in the heart of the Parco dei Castelli Romani. You can explore the town from two different perspectives: the CAI 503 Trail starts at a historic convent and reaches the 690-metre-high saddle of Monte Salomone, while museums, churches and palazzi offer insights into rural memory, sacred art and architectural history.

CAI 503 Trail and Monte Salomone

The CAI 503 Trail starts at the Convento di San Silvestro in the municipality of Monte Compatri. It reaches the 690-metre-high saddle of Monte Salomone. The elevation of 690 metres supplements the starting point at the Convento di San Silvestro with a specific topographical reference for route planning. This gives the trail a clear focus for your planning if, during a trip to Italy, you want to consider not only places and buildings but also elevation and landscape. The convent marks the documented beginning of the trail; this does not imply any further route details or statements about its current usability.

Rural Memory at the Museo Contadino

At the Museo Contadino, a farmhouse and the cellar of Cardinal Scipione Borghese from 1600 have been recreated. The museum also preserves objects, memories and images relating to the rural population. If you are interested in the everyday life of past generations, the appeal of this place lies in the combination of spatial representation and personal testimonies. The collection thus focuses on the lifeworld of the rural population without limiting it to individual buildings. A prior appointment is required for a visit.

Churches, Castle and Libraries

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta was built from 1630 onwards on the foundations of an older church dedicated to Santa Brigida. It houses paintings attributed to Vanni and Passignano. Palazzo Borghese was built on the ruins of a castle erected in 1423 by the Colonna family, commissioned by Marco Altemps. Palazzo Annibaldeschi is also part of the town's complex history: it served as the home of the Biblioteca Nazionale della Filosofia Italiana and the Biblioteca Comunale.

San Silvestro, Santuario and Pinacoteca

The first settlement of the Convento di San Silvestro dates back to the 15th century. Next to the convent, the Santuario della Madonna del Castagno was built in 1680. The Pinacoteca San Silvestro adds a distinctive art-historical note: its collection consists almost entirely of 17th-century works from the Caravaggesque and Mannerist schools. This creates a rich spectrum encompassing religious history, architecture and painting. The Santuario della Madonna del Castagno can only be visited by prior reservation.
