Bonate Sopra combines a vast, flat landscape with a townscape where religious buildings, fortified architecture and rural traces stand side by side.
A distinctive flat landscape
Bonate Sopra features a vast, flat landscape formed during the Würm glaciation by meltwater from glacial tongues. East of the settlement, the Lesina stream flows through the Bonate Sopra area.
Historic traces in the town centre
The historic centre is home to buildings with herringbone masonry made from river pebbles and reinforced with sandstone blocks. Numerous preserved courtyards recall the original storage of “stami”, agricultural tools or a wine press, as well as threshing floors and large areas for processing and storing wine. This townscape is complemented by the Casaforte Prezzati, a fortified house from the 14th century with loopholes and a portal made of Mapello stone. Palazzo Maggioni is a former Baroque monastery from the 17th century. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta has been documented in Bonate Sopra since the 9th century. In the historic centre, the courtyards stand alongside individual buildings with religious, fortified and monastic histories.
Church, chapel and accessible path
In the parish chapel of Ghiaie di Bonate, the Diocese of Bergamo approved the veneration of “Maria Regina della Famiglia”. The Chiesetta di San Geminiano is a rural church on the right bank of the Brembo. The archaeological site at the Chiesetta can be reached via a flat unpaved path that can also be used by people with reduced mobility, preferably accompanied. Access to the Chiesetta di San Geminiano is free of charge. At the Chiesetta di San Geminiano, the rural church and archaeological site are located on the right bank of the Brembo.
