Osio Sotto between Sacred Architecture and Everyday History

Osio Sotto combines the history of sacred architecture with insights into local everyday life and a designated natural area. Churches, a museum and a park each have different focal points that can be clearly distinguished when planning your own trip.

Churches with Different Historical Layers

The Chiesa di San Zenone is a late Baroque parish church in Osio Sotto, dated to the years 1742 to 1758. Its design and the statue on the façade are attributed to Antonio Maria Pirovano. The church contains marble statues, paintings by Federico Ferrario, Giovanni Raggi and Gioacchino Manzoni, as well as a Serassi organ from 1778 designated “Opus 107”.

The Museo Ruralia preserves a collection of objects from the first sixty years of the 20th century. It offers insights into local life, work traditions, celebrations and significant events of that period. In addition, the museum reconstructs craft workshops and work equipment associated, among other things, with shoemakers, carpenters, blacksmiths and butchers. As a result, earlier activities and social occasions come to the fore alongside the objects.

Several historical layers overlap at San Donato. The Chiesa di San Donato is documented by a property record dated 10 April 1443; the associated chapel was probably built between the 14th and 15th centuries. The Santuario di San Donato was expanded into a building with a Latin-cross floor plan and fitted with stucco, frescoes and paintings, including two works by Abramo Spinelli. The Chiesetta di San Giorgio also presents an unresolved dating question: it may date from the 14th century or, more likely, go back as far as the 11th century.

Cultural Highlights in the Town and Surrounding Area

The Biblioteca Civica offers the opportunity to take part in cultural and literary events organized by the library. The Palazzo Municipale Treviglio, a palace, is also located in the area around Osio Sotto. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from sacred buildings and rural heritage to public and regional points of reference.

The Natural Area along the Brembo

In the north of the Osio Sotto municipal area lies the PLIS Parco del Brembo, which is known as Parco del Brembo; Osio Sotto is one of the participating municipalities. Bosco Itala is an urban park within this PLIS. Parco del Brembo is considered a natural “oasis” intended to serve as a protected area in view of the high density of housing and industry east and west of the lower river course. For your orientation, this natural area provides a distinct focus alongside Osio Sotto’s sacred and museum-related themes.
