Churches and History in Carvico

Carvico combines several historic sites with trails and a landscape that differs noticeably from one area to another. The San Tomè archaeological site lies where the boundaries of Carvico, Calusco and Terno meet. By 1179 at the latest, Carvico had a church dedicated to Saint Martin. In the centre is the small Chiesina di Santa Maria del Campo, which had already been built by the end of the 13th century. These places take you through a history ranging from the archaeological site to medieval churches.

The Chiesa di San Martino at Via San Martino 57 in Carvico is also useful for finding your way around the town. The original church, Chiesa della Visitazione di Maria Santissima, was built in the 12th century. It can be reached via a staircase and stands on elevated ground above the square in front of it.

Museum and Local Highlights

A more recent cultural stop is the Museo Alpino in Carvico, which was inaugurated in June 2012. Together with the churches and the archaeological site, it broadens the view of the town’s different historical layers. This combination may be particularly interesting if, on a trip to Italy, you do not want to limit culture to a single building but instead combine history, local sites and a museum.

Terrain, Hiking and Cycling

North of Carvico’s built-up area, the terrain is hilly. The rest of the area is largely flat and slopes gently towards the south. This precise division helps you avoid classifying the landscape too generally as either mountainous or flat. As a specific reference for walks and hiking, Sentiero 895 begins in Parco Serraglio in Carvico. For cycling, a cycle path runs along the road on the SP 166 at its junction with Via Budriago. Both details indicate different connections to trails without defining the town through any particular type of excursion.

Getting There and Planning Your Trip

Carvico has no railway line. The Calusco d’Adda railway station, located about 2 km away, is used for train connections to Bergamo and Milan. If you are planning your trip around rail connections, this station is therefore an important reference point for getting around Carvico. Carvico’s village festival is scheduled for the first Sunday in September.
