Verdellino between history and everyday life

Verdellino can be explored through tangible traces from different periods. The oldest archaeological evidence of the town is a fragment of a Roman inscription set into the rear façade of the parish house. The town’s history therefore begins not with a general narrative, but with a visible detail in the historic townscape.

The fragment mentions the gens Statii. In addition, Verdellino was home to a castle belonging to the Suardi family. Both references lead to different chapters of the past and make the town interesting for visitors who, when travelling in Italy, pay attention not only to major attractions but also to smaller historical connections.

Sant’Ambrogio as an architectural focal point

The church of Sant’Ambrogio was rebuilt in 1890 based on a design by the architect Virginio Muzio. Parts of the previous building were incorporated into the new presbytery. The church was consecrated on 9 September 1899; during this consecration, the relics of Saints Alessandro and Bonifacio were placed in the high altar. The exterior also features a distinctive detail: the moulded portal is made of stone from Brembate and is crowned by a curved pediment interrupted in the middle.

Market, sanctuary and events

The weekly market at Piazzale Newton is part of everyday life in the town today. It takes place on Thursday mornings and offers fresh and unprocessed products. In the park surrounding the Santuario della Madonna dell’Olmo grows the elm tree that gives the sanctuary its name.

Another focus is psychophysical well-being. Armonia al Parco is an annual event dedicated to body care and holistic disciplines. Outdoor yoga sessions are planned as part of the event. For people with disabilities, the Biblioteca Civica “Don Lorenzo Milani” has an accessible entrance and suitable parking facilities.

Getting to Verdellino

Those reaching Verdellino from Venice via the A4 can exit at Dalmine and continue in the direction of Dalmine–Osio Sotto. For journeys from Milan and Bergamo, Verdello–Dalmine railway station is the direct rail arrival station. These two details provide different points of reference for the journey and help you adapt your choice of route to your starting point.

An e-BRT project is also planned for regional mobility. It envisages a route connecting the intermodal hub at Bergamo railway station with the FS railway station in Verdellino, via Dalmine. The areas affected are Bergamo, Lallio, Dalmine, Osio Sopra, Osio Sotto and Verdellino; the Kilometro Rosso science and technology park is also to be served.
