Discover Acquafredda: Rural Culture, Churches and Traditions

Acquafredda is located in the province of Brescia, in the eastern part of the Bassa Bresciana. The town combines evidence of its architectural and local history with a museum dedicated to rural culture, religious buildings and time-honoured traditions. This gives you a destination whose special features can be discovered particularly through specific places, historical details and local customs.

Museum and Palazzo Bonzi

The Museo della civiltà rurale is the focal point. It comprises around 500 catalogued objects displayed in four large rooms. The collections are divided into six major categories: agro-silvo-pastoral activities, domestic economy and rituals, handicrafts, hunting and fishing, trade and public services, and school-related activities. The thematic range therefore extends from agricultural and craft work to everyday life, education and public duties.

The museum is housed in the upper floor of Palazzo Bonzi. Palazzo Bonzi was built in 1667 and was the former palace of the Counts Bonzi; today it serves as the seat of the municipal administration of Acquafredda. The museum and palace therefore bring together rural everyday culture and a notable historic building in the town.

Practical information for visiting the museum

The Museo della civiltà rurale can be visited on request and during the Funzione d'Ottobre. Free guided tours are available by prior arrangement with the volunteer guides; their duration is estimated at around two hours. For orientation within the museum, it is important to note that the first floor can be reached by lift, while the second floor is accessible via stairs.

Churches and memorials

The Chiesa di San Biagio Vescovo e Martire is located in the centre of Acquafredda. The former parish church has a neoclassical façade and an interior with a barrel vault, columns, Corinthian capitals and painted wall decoration. Another historic landmark is the Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena. Its bell tower dates from the 16th century. The church was built within the castrum in the oldest part of Acquafredda, which is now called Castello; its construction is thought to date probably to the end of the 15th century.

The Monumento ai caduti in Acquafredda is also part of the townscape. Inaugurated on 24 April 1921, the monument is shaped like an obelisk and decorated with marble and bronze elements as well as reliefs. Together with Palazzo Bonzi and the churches, it shows different layers of local history, from historic architectural forms to public commemoration.

Traditions and local cuisine

The Funzione d'Ottobre is considered Acquafredda's most important traditional event. At the 2024 Funzione d'Ottobre, the municipality organised an extensive programme of cultural, sporting and leisure activities to celebrate local history, traditions and the community. One culinary tradition is Baccalà in umido: the dish is also known as “baccalà di Carnevale” and is traditionally eaten on the Saturday evening after Ash Wednesday.
