Gottolengo combines historic religious buildings, traces of early settlements, an Art Nouveau theatre and a local food culture in which the potato plays a special role.

Churches and historic buildings in the town centre

In the historic centre of Gottolengo, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo is located near Piazza XX Settembre. Its present building was completed in 1715 and replaced a chapel built around 1630. This chapel was established in memory of the victims of the plague. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo also hosts exhibitions and cultural events. This building therefore combines a clearly dated history with a cultural use.

The Chiesa parrocchiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo features a single-nave interior with side chapels and wall paintings. Its exterior façade is divided into two levels. Composite pilasters and a triangular pediment with acroteria define the design. The interior and exterior façade provide different architectural details of the same church.

Monastery, sanctuary and settlement history

The Convento di San Girolamo was established in the late 15th century as a Carmelite monastery. After its dissolution in 1797, it was converted into a civilian hospital. This later civilian use is therefore also part of the history of the former monastery.

The Santuario dell'Incidella is also known as Santa Maria in Scutella and Santa Maria della Scodella. It was built in the 17th century over an older chapel. The reported account of a healing miracle in 1653 prompted the construction of the Santuario dell'Incidella.

Notable points of interest can also be found beyond religious architecture. The Teatro Zanardelli is a cultural centre in Gottolengo and a destination for art enthusiasts. It is also an Art Nouveau building. The Cascina fortificata was built in the 16th century by the noble members of the Rodengo family. The Castellaro di Gottolengo is considered a typical example of a Bronze Age settlement. For those interested in culture, the selection therefore ranges from architectural styles to early settlement history.

Local cuisine and a fixed event date

The Sagra della Patata e dei Sapori di Gottolengo showcases the potato as a typical product of the area. The potato can be sampled in dishes from the local cuisine. The event will take place from 4 to 6 September 2026 as its 24th edition. The three-day period of the Sagra della Patata e dei Sapori di Gottolengo can be scheduled as a compact date block for a stay in September 2026.
