Bagolino: Mountain Trails, Art and Local Traditions

Bagolino combines paths into the mountain landscape with art, ethnographic culture and regional products. This creates a destination where cultural visits, traditional events and an excursion to a mountain destination can be planned alongside one another. Ethnographic Culture and Art

At the “Habitar in sta terra” Ethnographic Museum, the collections include everyday objects and work tools. The objects document various aspects of Bagolino’s culture and thus draw attention to the town’s everyday life and working world. Access to the ethnographic collection is possible only by prior reservation. If you plan to focus on this aspect, the museum visit should therefore be included in your daily itinerary well in advance.

The churches also have their own distinctive features. The parish church of San Giorgio contains works by Titian, Tintoretto and Palma il Giovane and is known as the “Cattedrale in Montagna” (“Mountain Cathedral”). The Church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius stands on the rock of the same name. The Bagolino Carnival takes place every year and winds through the town’s streets. During transhumance, cows, sheep and goats move through the streets of Bagolino together with their herders.

Paths to Churches and Lakes

Two paths with different profiles are available for hiking and landscape days. The approximately one-hour path to the Chiesetta di San Gervasio e Protasio is rated from moderately difficult to easy. It starts near the Ponte di Romanterra and runs partly through meadows and partly through woodland. The path to the Bruffione Lakes starts in Gaver, takes about one and a half hours and follows an easy route. The different time estimates help you fit a shorter or longer excursion into your daily plans without treating the two paths as equivalent.

Geology and Practical Information

The Bagolino GSSP section is well exposed at three locations—the A, B and C sites—in the bed of the Caffaro River near the Ponte di Romanterra, south of Bagolino. Admission to Pineta Park is free, adding an open-access green space to the range of options.

Bagòss and Farm Products

At La Malga del Re, you can taste Bagòss and other products from the farm. This adds a specific culinary connection to the paths, churches and customs, making Bagolino’s local character tangible beyond the landscape alone.
