Discover Capriolo: History, Trails and Franciacorta

Churches, Castle and Museums

The Chiesa Prepositurale di S. Giorgio in Capriolo was first mentioned in 1274 and was extensively remodeled and enlarged from 1674 onward. The church houses Gerolamo Romanino’s Resurrection, dated to around 1525. Also located on the town’s hilltop is the Castello – Monastero di S. Maria degli Angeli complex. It comprises a compact, irregularly trapezoidal fortified structure with a central courtyard and high surrounding walls. The castle is at the foot of the hill, with the monastery above it. Guided tours of the complex are organized by Pro Loco Capriolo.

The Museo Agricolo e del Vino Ricci Curbastro preserves thousands of objects that bear witness to historic agricultural work and comprises four thematically arranged rooms. In Capriolo’s historic center, the Piccolo Museo della Memoria displays memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars, as well as objects from everyday, agricultural, and craft life. The cultural spectrum therefore ranges from sacred art and fortified architecture to the history of regional work and daily life.

Trails along the Oglio and on Monte Alto

Stage 3 of the Via delle Sorelle passes through Capriolo after the villages and vineyards of Corte Franca and Adro. After the historic center, it follows the Oglio River along the Sentiero Verde dell’Oglio toward Paratico. Another route is the approximately 10-kilometer circular hike on Monte Alto. It begins near the Chiesa di San Giorgio, climbs uphill to the castle, passes the Chiesa degli Alpini, and reaches the summit with a cross.

Local orientation can also be understood through historic routes. Via Fontane Vecchie is a paved lane connecting Capriolo’s lower district with the Castello-Monastero. This area with natural springs also includes the historic fountain area known as Fontane Antiche. The Sentiero Verde dell’Oglio leads to the historic Capriolo NK cotton mill, passing under the railway line twice beforehand.

Capriolo is one of the municipalities in Parco dell’Oglio Nord. A cycling and walking path runs along the river in Parco Regionale dell’Oglio Nord. The 280-kilometer Ciclovia dell’Oglio also runs there, connecting Valle Camonica with the Po Valley. This gives you a clear range of options, from a local circular hike and a stage through several towns to an extensive cycling route.

Franciacorta and Local Specialties

At the Sagra di San Giorgio, held annually in April, the focus is on La Ret, Capriolo’s local salami bearing a De.Co. designation. Wine enthusiasts can choose between two different tasting formats: The Tenuta Moraschi tasting offers at least two and no more than four varieties of Franciacorta Moraschi DOCG. Lantieri offers guided cellar tours explaining the production of Franciacorta D.O.C.G., followed by a tasting of representative wines from the winery.
