Braone between Stone, Art and Trails

Braone combines a history shaped by stone, sacred art and trails through the southern part of Parco dell’Adamello. This creates a destination that is not limited to a single attraction: La Via della Pietra, the historic centre and several routes each offer a different focus between culture and landscape.

Experience the History of Stoneworking

La Via della Pietra is a circular route through three places in the municipality of Braone. The trail conveys the history and enduring heritage of local stoneworking. A specific site associated with this tradition is the Dosso degli Areti quarry. It can be reached on foot from Braone in approximately one hour and twenty minutes, via the road towards Negola-Servil and then along a mule track.

La Via della Pietra transforms the abandoned Dosso degli Areti quarry into a small open-air museum about minerals, places and trails in Parco dell’Adamello. As a result, the route reveals not only the area’s traces of craftsmanship, but also its connection with the park’s landscapes and trails.

Routes Above and Through Braone

Camminata Alta is a 4,250-metre circular route with a total elevation gain of 250 metres. The trail runs directly above Braone in the southern part of Parco dell’Adamello, through traditionally agricultural areas and submontane woodland. The start of Camminata Alta is about 100 metres from the equipped Pom area, near the road from Braone to Niardo.

The section of the Cammino di Carlo Magno that passes through Braone runs mostly through woods and along easy paths, some of which are paved, offering views over the valley. The Cammino di Carlo Magno leads from Breno via Niardo, Braone and Ceto to Nadro. Another route also starts in Scalassone at an elevation of 1,060 metres, at the junction of Val Paghera and Val Braone above Braone in Valle Camonica. This brings together in Braone trails with different landscapes and geographical connections.

Historic Centre and Sacred Art

Four memorial fountains dating from 1923 still stand in Braone’s historic centre. Braone is also home to an antique oven made of Sarnico stone, dating from 1580. Casa Gronchi has Gothic windows and an Arab-style door dating from 1511. These buildings make the area’s history visible in several specific locations.

The parish church of Santa Maria della Purificazione preserves a fresco of the Madonna and Child from the 18th-century Lombard school. It also contains a painting of the Purification of Mary by an anonymous 16th-century artist. In Braone, a fresco triptych removed from the Lardelli house in Via Ziralda, depicting Saint Dominic, the Holy Family and Saint Peter, further enriches the area’s artistic and historical heritage.

High Plateau and Moorlands at Foppe di Braone

The Foppe di Braone are among the area’s landscape highlights. Located at around 1,700 metres, they form a glacially created high plateau with moorlands surrounded by dense woodland. The area around Braone therefore ranges from historic traces of stoneworking and sacred art to landscapes with a distinctly alpine character.
