Cologne: Monte Orfano, Wine Landscape and History
Cologne between Franciacorta and Monte Orfano
Cologne is located in Franciacorta, where hilly landscapes and traditional wine production come together. The region is considered an area of considerable oenological and tourist interest. A defining landscape feature is the contiguous park of Villa Gnecchi: it extends the green area of Monte Orfano into the built-up area of Cologne.
The Brescia–Bergamo–Lecco railway line is also useful for orientation. It crosses the municipality of Cologne from east to west and stops in the southern part of the municipality.
Church, Castle and Museum
The Church of San Giacomo retains its original dimensions and structure; inside, there are numerous fragments of frescoes. The Convento dei Cappuccini was built near the Church of San Giacomo on the slopes of Monte Orfano. The restored monastery preserves its original cloister.
The actual castle area of Il Castello includes 12th-century cellars, a portico, a well and a courtyard. A 13th-century fresco depicting a hunting scene can be seen on the main wall. The bell tower was built from 1500 onwards and was not completed until 1863. It is not accessible at all times; public visits are possible on the occasion of special events, local festivals or organised tours.
The Museo Civico Didattico covers the rural, industrial, social, cultural and educational history of Cologne. It is divided into three sections: 20th-century crafts and industry, rural life in the local farmsteads, and a reconstructed classroom.
Paths on Monte Orfano and practical orientation
Monte Orfano has the Sentiero 980 Pedemontana trail and the Percorso vita trail. The hiking trail on Monte Orfano descends along the ridge towards Cologne and ends at Via Fratelli Facchetti. The continuation follows a cycle path to Via Brodo di Cappone and then an unpaved path along the Seriola Fusia.
The Chiesa di Sant’Eusebio is wheelchair accessible and open to all citizens. Its opening hours depend on liturgical activities and can be requested directly from the church. In the historic town centre, Piazza Garibaldi is the centre of civic life.
Winegrowing at the foot of Monte Orfano
The Tenuta Martinelli winery, run by brothers Giuseppe, Fabio and Cristian, is located at the foot of Monte Orfano and has its own vineyards in the localities of Cologne, Provaglio d’Iseo and Passirano. Also in Cologne, in Franciacorta, are the Vigneti Cenci – La Boscaiola vineyards; they extend along the foot of Monte Orfano.
If you are looking for a hotel in Cologne, you can choose your priorities based on these specific points of reference: Piazza Garibaldi in the historic town centre, the paths and vineyards around Monte Orfano, or the churches, castle and museum.
