Discover Marone: Churches, Trails and Local History
Marone combines Roman history, Baroque sacred architecture and trails through the countryside. In Cò de Ela, also known as Capo della Villa, south of Marone, a Roman villa was still in use in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. There are also churches, a flat cycle and walking path along Lake Iseo, outdoor climbing routes and the approximately 13-kilometre-long Strada dell’Olio within the municipality.
Roman Traces and Medieval Local History
The Roman villa in Cò de Ela offers a glimpse into the area’s long history. The Church of San Pietro also represents an earlier historical period: it stood within a fortification and was connected with the main settlement of Pregasso at the time. Until 1578, it served as a parish church. Such evidence gives the local history several chronological layers, without reducing Marone to a single historical chapter.
Churches with Their Own Distinctive Character
The parish church of San Martino di Tours was consecrated in 1754 and features remarkable Baroque decorations. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Rota offers a different accent; it was built in the 16th century in a gorge in the Opol Valley. The sanctuary’s older church preserves frescoes by Giovanni da Marone. In Vello, the Church of Sant’Eufemia adds another example of historic religious architecture: construction began in 1699 and was completed before 1716.
Between the Lakeside Path, Hiking and Climbing
Nearby Vello is connected to the Vello–Toline cycle and walking path. The flat path runs from Vello di Marone to Toline di Pisogne along the former lakeside road, cut into the rock directly beside Lake Iseo. It is not accessible to motor vehicles.
A trail from Marone railway station reaches Croce di Marone in about two hours. Because of its exposed position and steep ascent, the route from Vello to Corna Trentapassi is recommended only for experienced hikers. Marone also has numerous rock faces and several equipped outdoor climbing routes. Depending on your own experience, you can therefore choose between a flat lakeside section, a longer mountain hike and climbing.
The Strada dell’Olio
The Strada dell’Olio is an approximately 13-kilometre-long route within the municipality of Marone. It complements the paths along the lake and the hiking connections with another specific destination for planning a day out. Getting There and Finding Your Way Around
Marone is connected to the Brescia–Iseo–Edolo regional railway line. The station is located in the historic centre and just a few minutes’ walk from the landing stage. The Marone information point distributes information material on excursions, cycle paths and trekking in the surrounding area, providing a practical starting point for further orientation.
