Prevalle among caves, churches and regional history

Buco del Frate is located on Monte Budellone in the municipality of Prevalle and is considered one of the region of Brescia’s most significant underground cavities. It has been protected as a natural monument since 1983. In Buco del Frate, the cave bear (Ursus spelaeus), wolf (Canis lupus), fox (Vulpes vulpes) and marmot (Marmota marmota) are among the most frequently recorded species. Buco del Frate connects the site on Monte Budellone with the animal species recorded in the cavity.

Caves and landscape on Monte Budellone

On the southern slope of the same Monte Budellone lies BĂĽs dei Lader, a small cave in Liassic limestone. BĂĽs dei Lader adds the geological connection to Liassic limestone on the southern slope of Monte Budellone. Together with Buco del Frate, it forms a natural-history focus that includes two caves on Monte Budellone.

Palazzo Morani-Cantoni and rural culture

Palazzo Morani-Cantoni leads into a different historical period. It was built in the first half of the 18th century for Count Giovanni Morani and displays typical neoclassical aesthetic features. At the same time, the palazzo remained unfinished. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina e dell’Agricoltura in Prevalle is located in the palazzo’s former stables. At the palazzo, neoclassical features and everyday rural culture come together through the museum in the former stables.

Churches with precise historical dates

The campanile next to the Church of San Zenone in Prevalle Sotto was built in 1596 and can be viewed from the outside. The tower of San Zenone is inclined by about 76 centimetres at a height of 28.70 metres, corresponding to approximately 1.52 degrees. The present structure of the Church of San Zenone Vescovo was completed in 1818 and consecrated in the same year. The Parish of San Michele Arcangelo in Prevalle was founded on 15 October 1462 by Bishop Bartolomeo Malipiero through its separation from the Pieve di Nuvolento. Prevalle’s sacred heritage therefore extends from the 15th to the 19th century.
