Rovato between urban history and Monte Orfano

Rovato can be discovered through its squares, churches and preserved traces of fortifications, as well as through Monte Orfano. Piazza Cavour and the old centre

Piazza Cavour was designed by the architect Rodolfo Vantini. Its arcaded wings are arranged amphitheatrically around the characteristic pebble paving. The central arch is particularly striking: It preserves the historic entrance to Rovato’s old centre and still leads to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta and into the heart of old Rovato. Monasteries and sacred art at Monte Orfano

The history of the Convento della Santissima Annunciata is connected with the municipality of Rovato and Monte Orfano: On 1 April 1449, the municipality granted the friars of the Order of the Servants of Mary a plot of land for the construction of the monastery. In 1452, the monastery was occupied by a community of Servites. The Convento della Santissima Annunciata preserves a fresco of the Annunciation and four prophets by Girolamo Romanino in the lunettes. Romanino created the choir decoration between 1535 and 1540.

The Santuario di Santo Stefano degli Appestati originally served as a deaconry supporting travellers. The Santuario di S. Stefano preserves wall paintings dating from the 14th century to the first quarter of the 16th century.

Castello di Rovato and the depiction of the town

Parts of the northern and western curtain walls and cylindrical towers have been preserved from Castello di Rovato. These towers shaped the depiction of Rovato as a town with towers in the painting cycle featuring the “Stoning of Saint Stephen”. The cycle is located in the apse of the church dedicated to the saint on Monte Orfano. The preserved castle structures and their depiction therefore make it possible to understand how prominent the towers were in the historic townscape.

Walking routes and views on Monte Orfano

The side of Monte Orfano facing Rovato offers walking routes with varying levels of difficulty. Access to Monte Orfano is free. From the summit, views extend over the hills of Franciacorta and the Po Valley; in clear weather, Brescia can be seen in the distance, as can the beginning of the Apennines. Rovato as a road and railway hub

Rovato is an important road and railway hub. State Road 11 Padana Superiore, the Milan–Venice motorway, the Brebemi A35 motorway and the road from Valle Camonica to the plain meet here. The Turin–Milan–Venice, Bergamo–Brescia and Rovato–Iseo–Edolo railway lines also run through the town.
