Discover Calcinato: History, Art and Trails
Calcinato combines a distinctive landscape setting with a richly documented cultural history. The Chiese River runs along Calcinato; at the same time, the town lies on the outer edge of the morainic amphitheater of Lake Garda. This creates a destination where, when planning your trip, you can view the natural environment, townscape and traces of the past from different perspectives.
Landscape and Trails
Calcinato’s municipal cycling and walking paths are connected to those of the neighboring municipalities. This offers a practical perspective for guests who enjoy structuring their days around walking or cycling. Depending on your personal pace, you can get to know Calcinato through exercise, landscapes and changes of scenery, without committing to a single cultural destination.
Roman Traces and Historic Buildings
Relics from Roman times found in Calcinato include an inscription dedicated to Apollo, a tomb with grave goods and a coin hoard from the imperial period. The townscape is also marked by the Torre Civica, a medieval town tower with remains of the castle. Archaeological finds and visible architectural traces thus come together, giving the cultural tour different historical layers.
Another historic landmark is the Ponte Settecentesco. It has three arches over the Chiese River and connects the municipality of Calcinato with its hamlet of Calcinatello. Inside the Auditorium Don Bertini are frescoes dating from the mid-16th to the 19th century. A memorial plaque at the Torre Civica commemorates 83 people who fell in the First World War.
Churches and Art in Calcinato
The parish church of San Vincenzo di Calcinato is situated panoramically at the top of a hill. Within the town’s former fortified enclosure, it occupies the northern area. Inside is a Resurrection by Paolo Farinati, created in 1583. In Calcinatello, the Church of the Natività di Maria contains a 16th-century fresco depicting Saint John the Baptist.
Smaller religious buildings also lead through the history of the town. The Chiesetta di San Francesco in Costiolo was built by Francesco Bonacini toward the end of the 16th century. Its high altar has a decorated wooden antependium from the 16th century. In the hamlet of Garletti, the Chiesetta di Santo Stefano was built in the Middle Ages as a diaconia of the Pieve di Pontenove di Bedizzole. These two churches add independent historic settings away from the larger buildings to the overall picture.
