Linate between Local History, the Airport and Linea 7

Linate combines early local history with the Church of Sant’Ambrogio, the development of the airport and the Linea 7 cycling route to Paullo.

History of Linate and Sant’Ambrogio

Linate was first mentioned in an official document in the 12th century. The Church of Sant’Ambrogio has been explicitly mentioned since the 14th century and is considered one of Milan’s oldest churches due to its patronage. In 1938, it was elevated to the status of a provost church. The bell tower of the new Church of Sant’Ambrogio in Linate was dismantled down to the belfry in 1960 because of the airport’s requirements. The dismantled bell tower is a concrete example of the influence that airport requirements had on Linate’s architectural development.

A former monastery-farm complex later became the rural Cortazza farm; traces of it are still present. Historically, Linate was located on the banks of the Lambro. Linate was also situated along the road to Paullo built by the Romans. Via Rimembranze in Linate is planted with linden trees. The linden trees on Via Rimembranze also provide a present-day detail in Linate’s streetscape.

Airport and connection with the M4

Linate Airport was established in January 1933 as a replacement for the old Taliedo airfield. On October 21, 1937, it was inaugurated as “Aeroporto di Linate, Enrico Forlanini.” ATM’s M4 reaches Linate Airport from Milan city center in 12 minutes; the line is 15 km long and has 21 stops.

Linea 7: Cycling route between Linate and Paullo

The approximately 17 km-long Linea 7 cycling route of the CAMBIO Biciplan connects Linate with Paullo and passes through Peschiera Borromeo, Pantigliate, Mediglia and Tribiano, as well as partly through Colturano. Linea 7 has its own signage and is integrated into the public transport stops. The route connects several local sections; its approximate length provides a clear framework for planning the duration of a cycling tour.

Events between Tradition and the Present

The 43rd Festa di Linate is scheduled to take place from September 4 to September 6, 2026, at the Campo Comunale “A. Moretti” in Peschiera Borromeo. The 41st Festa di Linate featured a procession with a brass band through the streets of Linate; there was also a vintage car gathering. All in Experience included a football tournament with four teams of six players each and a concert by young emerging artists.

Art in the Departure Area

Installations created in collaboration with the Museo del Design Italiano of Triennale Milano are located in the central departure area of Milano Linate.
