Sacred Art and Historic Sites

San Giuliano Milanese combines sacred art with rural cultural heritage. If you would like to combine historic architecture and a cultivated cultural landscape in Italy, you will find frescoes, churches, farmsteads and traditional irrigation systems here as varied themes for your trip.

The Abbazia di Viboldone preserves one of the Lombardy’s most extensive and significant complexes of Gothic frescoes. These include the Madonna in Maestà e Santi, dated 1349, and a Last Judgment attributed to Giusto de’ Menabuoi. The Umiliati settled in Viboldone in 1176 and agreed to build the abbey dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.

The Chiesa San Giuliano Martire also represents the town’s architectural history: its façade is considered one of the most significant examples of Milanese Baroque architecture. During the restoration completed in March 2018, apotropaic lion-head decorations were discovered in the upper areas of the church.

The Chiesa e Ossario di Santa Maria della Neve includes an ossuary with a fresco of the Madonna and Child, documented since the mid-18th century. The ossuary has a pronaos supported by two small granite columns. The church contains frescoes by local painters, a painted plaster statue of the Madonna Addolorata and a large oil painting by an unknown artist.

Rural Heritage and Landscape

The Museo della civiltà contadina Luisa Carminati is located in the Cascina Carlotta, a traditional 17th-century farmstead with a square courtyard. In seven rooms, the museum displays various evidence of rural life.

The Cascina Occhiò also brings rural architecture to life. Its irregular farmyard complex preserves stables and arcades, a manor house facing the garden, and L-shaped residential buildings for farm workers. Three large naïve paintings depicting scenes from rural life adorn its courtyard façade.

In the landscape of San Giuliano Milanese, Marcite and Fontanili, agricultural irrigation and cultivation systems, are still in use today. Their development began in the 11th century.

Paths, Nature and a Historic Event

The town offers several clearly distinct options for active days. The Sentiero dei Giganti is one of Italy’s religious routes recognized by the MiT and begins and ends at the San Giuliano M.se suburban railway station on line S1. This information makes it easier to orient yourself when planning a day around this route. Parco Nord offers paths for walking, jogging and cycling.

Rocca Brivio is served by bus routes Z420 and E038; the stop is called Via Emilia/Rocca Brivio. When choosing accommodation, therefore, what matters most is whether you want to focus on sacred art, rural heritage, paths through nature or the September event in Zivido.

“Ritornano i Giganti” is a historical Renaissance reenactment held every September in the Zivido district. It includes a theatrical reconstruction of the decisive battle fought during the night of 12–13 September, as well as a costume procession in which local residents portray the historical figures and their entourages.

Further places to include in your Italy travel plans are Arluno, Garbagnate Milanese, Cinisello Balsamo, Linate, Varedo, Cusago, Limbiate and Terrazzano.
