Albosaggia: Art, Nature and Mountain Trails

Albosaggia can be explored through several different facets: art in the parish church of Santa Caterina, trails from Porto to higher elevations, and nature experiences in the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. This gives you a choice of different focuses, including culture, hiking, cycling, winter activities and family-oriented excursions. When choosing a hotel, you can align the focus of your stay with the specific experiences you have planned.

Art and History in Santa Caterina

The parish church of Santa Caterina houses two paintings by Giovan Battista Recchi and an altarpiece by Cesare Ligari from 1739. The altarpiece depicts the death of Saint Joseph. The church was built from 1354 onwards on the site of an earlier chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony. The six side chapels, with their elaborate decorations by various artists, are also worth seeing.

Trails Around Porto

The “In giro per Albosaggia” circular route begins at a car park on the Adda in Porto, next to the eastern entrance to the Sentiero Valtellina. The paved mule track known as Risc’ leads from Porto towards Ca Berardi and Moia through a wooded area and over a wooded ridge with fine views of the river. It also passes Crap del Mainèt, where old rock carvings can be seen.

The Sentiero dei Pedrüsc’ is an old path that was once frequently used to reach the parish church of Santa Caterina, the cemetery and some alpine settlements on the right bank of the Torchione.

Forests, Animals and Destinations at Higher Elevations

Albosaggia is part of the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. The park is characterised by extensive forests and rich biodiversity. Trout live in Lago della Casera. Marmots can be observed particularly well in the hamlet of Campo Cerviero. A climb through the Livrio Valley leads to the hamlet of San Salvatore at an altitude of 1,516 m.

Winter, the River and Environmental Education

In winter, Pizzo Meriggio is a popular destination for ski mountaineers. Baita delle Zocche is home to a high-altitude environmental education laboratory run by the park. It offers impressive excursions and practical fieldwork opportunities. The sports proposed by Polisportiva Albosaggia also include water sports.

Cycling Routes with Significant Gradients

The Albosaggia–San Giacomo route passes through several districts in the lower part of Albosaggia. Its ascent is entirely on asphalt, while the descent follows a fairly rocky gravel road. Some sections have gradients of more than 15 per cent.

The Alpe Campelli–Lago della Casera circular route is more demanding. It passes through the higher alpine settlements of Albosaggia and begins at the Campelli car park with steep climbs, initially on an asphalt road and then on an unpaved road. The gradient exceeds 20 per cent in places. At Ponte Bianco Sozzani, there is a bike rental service on the Sentiero Valtellina.

Experiences for Families

Il Paradiso degli Asini in Albosaggia offers family-oriented activities and walks with donkeys, as well as experiences in the forest and in nature.

Historical Heritage at Palazzo Paribelli

In 2026, cultural tours and guided activities focused on presenting the historical heritage took place at Palazzo Paribelli under the supervision of FAI. Together with the parish church of Santa Caterina, the Palazzo provides another cultural reference point for planning your time in Albosaggia.

When choosing a hotel in Albosaggia, you can first establish your personal daily rhythm: Santa Caterina and Palazzo Paribelli represent cultural sightseeing, Porto offers trails along the Adda and the Sentiero Valtellina, while the cycling routes, San Salvatore, Pizzo Meriggio and the nature activities each provide a different focus.
