Morbegno between Bridges, Frescoes and Bitto Cheese

Morbegno reveals its history not only through individual buildings, but also through the transitions between bridges, paths, churches and museums. Those wishing to explore the town culturally will find historic architecture, sacred art and insights into the natural environment of the Province of Sondrio. There is also a path with old frescoes, an annual cheese event and a rent-a-bike service connecting several places along one route.

Historic Bridges and Fresco Paths

A prominent landmark is the Ponte di Ganda. It was built by Giovanni Antonio Amadeo in 1490, making it one of the historic structures that vividly illustrate Morbegno’s past. The Ponte del Bitto is another historic bridge. It crosses the Bitto stream in the town centre and preserves a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1756. The statue faces the historic centre.

A historic path in Morbegno also passes through an environment shaped by art history. Old frescoes have been preserved along it, including a Pietà and a depiction of Saint George and the dragon. Such motifs make the path particularly interesting for visitors who want to learn about the town’s history not only in enclosed spaces, but directly at its buildings and along its paths.

Palaces, Churches and Sacred Art

Palazzo Malacrida is an aristocratic building erected by descendants of a noble family. Construction of the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista began on 14 April 1680. Its façade is curved and adorned with nine statues. This allows visitors to observe, in a single church building, both a clearly documented historical beginning and striking architectural details.

Further sacred art can be found in the convent of the Presentation, which preserves fragments of frescoes. A sanctuary in Morbegno also contains frescoes as well as a large gilded wooden altarpiece on the main altar. Together with the bridges, Palazzo Malacrida and the church, these features create a diverse picture of the town, where religious art, family history and historic paths stand side by side.

Natural History Museum in the Historic Centre

The Museo civico di Storia naturale has been housed since 1983 in the 18th-century Palazzo Gualteroni in the historic centre of Morbegno. The exhibition extends over two floors and includes sections on geosciences and wildlife. Large dioramas show the natural habitats of the Province of Sondrio. The museum thus offers a distinct perspective on the landscapes and natural topics that complement a cultural visit to the town.

Walk, Cheese Festival and Bicycle Planning

On the Sentiero Morbegno, the return route to the centre passes local flora; with a little luck, animals can also be spotted. Gastronomically, the focus is on the Mostra del Bitto: the event takes place every year in October in Morbegno and revolves around the typical Bitto cheese.

For planning by bicycle, a rent-a-bike service is available at several places along the route, including Colico, Morbegno, Sondrio, Tirano and Bormio. Bicycles can be returned at one of the five designated stations.
