Rock carvings, castles, frescoes and regional specialties give Grosio a clearly recognizable cultural profile. In addition, there is the Antiquarium, palaces in the surrounding area, nearby peaks and routes in Valgrosina.

Villa, Frescoes and Sacred Art

Villa Visconti Venosta houses a museum with historic furnishings, old volumes, memorabilia and works of art from the collection of Marchese Emilio. In the Chiesa di S. Giorgio in Grosio, the presbytery and apse feature a cycle of frescoes executed at the beginning of the 16th century. It includes the Last Judgment, scenes from the life of Saint George, Doctors of the Church and prophets.

The Rock Carvings of Rupe Magna

Rupe Magna is 84 metres long and 35 metres wide. It features more than 5,000 rock carvings dating from the end of the Neolithic period to the Iron Age. Its size and chronological span make it a particularly tangible testament to the long history of the area around Grosio.

The carved motifs include anthropomorphic figures, animals, geometric shapes, cup marks and everyday objects such as rakes. Around 50 additional rocks with carvings were discovered on Dosso Giroldo, north of Dosso dei Castelli.

Archaeological Finds at the Antiquarium

The Antiquarium presents a permanent exhibition featuring the results of archaeological excavations on Dosso dei Castelli and Dosso Giroldo. The finds consist predominantly of ceramics from settlements whose origins and development date from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, more precisely from the 16th to the 2nd/1st century BC. Anyone wishing to understand historical connections through concrete objects will find here a complement to the rock carvings and the town’s buildings.

Castles and Medieval Defensive Architecture

Castello Nuovo was built between 1350 and 1375. Its defining features are a double defensive wall and a fortified inner tower, a keep. Despite its ruined condition, Castello Nuovo is considered the best-preserved and most interesting castle in the Province of Sondrio.

A Romanesque bell tower remains from Castello di San Faustino. In Grosio, you can therefore encounter different forms of historic architecture – from a fortified castle to a surviving ecclesiastical building.

Valtellina Specialties and Routes in Valgrosina

In Grosio, Salumeria Macelleria Bordoni sells bresaola and slinzega, traditional cured meats from Valtellina. Both specialties represent a tangible culinary connection to the region and complement the cultural attractions with an insight into the local food tradition.

Valgrosina has mountain bike and e-bike routes, including connections to trails such as Lagrosina. This also makes Grosio relevant for travel planning from the perspective of cycling routes and active exploration of the landscape.

Monte Storile and Pizzo Alto alla Croce are peaks in the immediate vicinity of Grosio. Monte Fo and Dosso Campesello are also peaks in the area around Grosio. The palaces in the surrounding area include Palazzo Andres Giacomoni, Palazzo Pievani, Palazzo Quadrio-Foppoli and Palazzo Parravicini.
