Aprica: skiing, nature and culture between two valleys

Aprica is located on the pass that connects Valtellina with Val Camonica. This location shapes the character of the town and combines alpine landscapes with Italian culture. Nature by the ancient glacial peat bog

A few minutes from Aprica lies the Pian di Gembro nature reserve. There, easy and undemanding paths lead through an ancient glacial peat bog. Along the way, you can observe rare plants. This makes the area particularly suitable for a peaceful hike and for travellers who want to appreciate the special features of alpine nature alongside mountain activities.

Winter, skiing history and first descents

The Campetti ski area is located directly in the town and is suitable for beginners skiing for the first time. The Museo dello Sci e della Montagna offers a cultural perspective on winter sports. There, you can trace the development of skiing from the first simple wooden skis to modern racing skis. Aprica thus combines the practical experience on the slopes with an insight into the history of equipment and skiing.

Exploring on foot and by bike

The themed trail “Il legno è vita” runs from Malga Magnolta to Rifugio CAI Valtellina. Several information boards along the route explain the importance of wood. For cyclists, the route “Mortirolo from Aprica” is a clearly defined planning point: it starts in Aprica at an altitude of 1,200 metres, is 27.8 kilometres long and climbs to 1,800 metres at the Mortirolo. It is listed for the period from late spring to late autumn.

Art and historical traces in the town

The contrade of Aprica preserve murals by local artist Alcide Pancot. In S. Maria, the paintings depict scenes from customs and everyday culture, while in S. Pietro and Dosso they portray mountain landscapes, animals or flowers. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, which can be reached on Aprica’s tourist circuit, dates back to the 13th century. In the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, you will find a Baroque portal from 1778 and frescoes by Turildo Conconi.

Il Mulino dei Plaz is also known as Mulì di Plaz and is one of the town’s tangible historical landmarks. The old mill consists of two very similar stone-built structures erected near the Aprica stream. In addition, Aprica has a municipal semi-Olympic swimming pool with water heated by local springs. When choosing your hotel, it is therefore worth considering the pace of travel you want: winter days, a cycling tour, easy paths through the peat bog or culture in the town each set different priorities.
