Albaredo Per San Marco: Trails, History and Bitto Culture

Albaredo Per San Marco is a place whose history, trails and cheese-making tradition are closely linked to the Valle del Bitto. Trails and excursions in the Valle di Albaredo

The ecomuseum offers guided tours of the historic center of Albaredo as well as accompanied excursions in the Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. Thanks to its dense network of paths and routes, the Valle di Albaredo offers numerous trekking opportunities. The transhumance trail to the summit of Monte Lago is suitable for experienced hikers. Those who prefer a shorter historical route can follow the ecomuseum trail, an approximately 3.5-kilometer connection from the Madonna delle Grazie chapel to Alpe Vesenda Bassa.

The elevations and approximate walking times also help with personal selection: On the Via Priula, you reach Piazza San Marco in the town center after approximately two hours of walking and 500 meters of ascent. The Sentiero dei Misteri takes approximately three hours when returning along the same path and has around 520 meters of elevation gain. Snowshoeing uses the snow-covered roads, paths and mule tracks of the Valle del Bitto. The Sentiero dei Misteri begins shortly before a bridge and is marked by a blue sign.

Trade Route, Village Stories and Ecomuseum

The Via Priula was built between 1590 and 1592 via the Passo San Marco and the Valle di Albaredo as a Venetian trade route toward Northern Europe. The crossing from Albaredo to Gerola connects the two most important centers of Bitto culture. Another regional connection is shown by the 110-kilometer Via del Bitto: it runs through the Valle del Bitto di Albaredo and connects with Val Tartano.

The painted village of Albaredo is characterized by several murals depicting the history and culture of the Valle del Bitto. The parish church of Saints Rocco and Sebastiano in the center dates from the 16th century, was recently restored and has a Baroque portal, a single-nave interior and two side chapels. The ecomuseum trail includes a charcoal-burning site, a dairy house and the ruins of smelting furnaces for ironworking at an altitude of approximately 1,180 meters. The charcoal-burning site documents the former work of charcoal burners in the valley; in the dairy house, freshly milked milk was left to stand so that the cream could separate. Bitto and Matusc: Cheese from Valtellina

The local cheese culture can be traced along the Sentiero del Matusc. In Gradesc, visitors can observe the production of Matusc cheese at an altitude of 1,621 meters. Matusc is a semi-fat cheese with a semi-firm, semi-cooked, semi-mature or matured curd texture. It is made in spring and autumn from raw cow's milk that has been partially skimmed by allowing the cream to rise. Bitto is a cheese typical of Valtellina with a protected designation of origin (DOP). It is produced exclusively during the summer months on high-altitude pastures from cow's milk with a variable proportion of goat's milk. The folk group “I Barilocc” from Albaredo showcases traditional crafts, including the production of “matusc” cheese, woodworking such as making wooden shoes, wool processing and sausage preparation.

The Visit Albaredo per San Marco information point is located at an altitude of 950 meters at the Porta del Parco delle Orobie Valtellinesi. This provides both a local point of contact and information along the route for orientation.
