Prata Camportaccio: Moraine Landscape, Chestnut Groves and Trails

Prata Camportaccio lies on a Quaternary moraine amphitheatre deposited by glaciers at the foot of Monte Beleniga and Pizzo Prata, by the rocks of Dona. This combination of geological landscape, mountain scenery and historical traces gives the town a multifaceted profile for an individually planned trip.

Landscape Between Moraines and Chestnut Groves

The Schiesone stream continues to contribute to the erosion of the foundations of the ancient moraines of Prata. In the hamlet of Porettina vecchia, the Trebecca stream forms a waterfall. The chestnut grove of Prata Camportaccio is also a defining landscape area: since 2002, more than 200 sweet chestnut trees have been maintained there through conservation pruning and grafting onto wild rootstock. The grove covers more than 10 hectares.

Hiking Trails with Different Stages

The Pista della Rebbia leads from Prata Camportaccio via Via San Cristoforo to Pratella, passing through Bilinghero, Stovano Inferiore and Stovano Superiore. For a longer mountain hike, the footpath to the unstaffed Rifugio Il Biondo crosses the bridge over the Schiesone, reaches Pratella after about an hour and then the refuge after another approximately one and a half hours. You can reserve overnight stays through its website.

Another route to Rifugio Il Biondo leads from Chiavenna to Dona in Prata Camportaccio, then climbs via Lottano, Nirola and Pradotti. The hike to the refuge follows two routes on either side of Val Schiesone. A turnoff before Uschione leads into the valley of the Schiesone stream, dominated by Pizzo di Prata, and climbs to Alpe Pradotti and Alpe Belvedere.

The route from Prata Camportaccio to Uschione reaches the small, characteristic villages of Uschione and Nesossi after a short detour to Lotteno. The Sentiero del castagneto is an easy circular trail through chestnut groves, old settlement centres and traditional Grèe. These are buildings used for smoking chestnuts.

History and Local Particularities

The Church of Sant’Eusebio in Prata Camportaccio is first documented in 1178. At the San Cassiano station, a small bell tower marks the church that replaced the medieval church destroyed by a flood in 1893. A picturesque complex of Krötti near the railway in Prata Camportaccio is suitable as a brief stop along the route.

The rock carvings of Dona attest that Prata was an important point of reference in the valley’s prehistory. They are located in a particularly favourable position for controlling the valley. Rock carvings from the Late Bronze Age can be viewed along the path between Chiavenna and the hamlet of Dona.

Chestnut culture is also part of the local identity. Since 2017, the Consorzio Forestale has been growing Mais rostrato di Valchiavenna on small plots in Prata Camportaccio. Five chestnut varieties from Prata Camportaccio are the only ones in Lombardy to have been included in the register of agricultural and food biodiversity. The event “La giornata del castagneto” takes place on the last Sunday in October in Stova all’Orlo di Prata and includes educational visits for schools or groups.
