Altitude and Mountain Settlement

Sant'Antonio Albareda is located at an altitude of 833 metres above sea level in Valle Spluga. Sant'Antonio di Albareda is a mountain settlement that is no longer permanently inhabited. Its altitude of 833 metres clearly places Albareda within the mountain landscape of Valle Spluga. At the same time, its current settlement status distinguishes it from permanently inhabited villages. This combination is relevant for travel planning when the day's itinerary is focused on landscapes, paths and a historic building.

Church and Local History

The Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova was built in 1667. Its construction history therefore dates back to the 17th century. In a day's itinerary combining paths and history, the church forms a separate cultural section alongside the landscape sections.

Sommarovina: Hiking and Cycling

On the Anello Mese–Sommarovina, the path turns towards Albareda after about 250 metres on Via Motto. For orientation purposes, this turn comes early in the route. The Sommarovina circular route is more suitable for e-bikes than for conventional bicycles. When planning a cycling tour, the choice of bicycle should therefore match this route's characteristics.

At Albareda, the Sommarovina circular route has a fountain and a rest area with benches and tables beside the Church of San Antonio. The circular route also offers a view eastwards towards Pizzo di Prata, which is also called Il Pizzone. The easterly direction of the view and the facilities at the rest area are therefore specific orientation points along this section.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The D3 trail to Sant'Antonio starts in Mese near the Church of San Vittore. After leaving the chestnut forests, the trail reaches the Albareda-Sant'Antonio settlement. For hiking planning, the starting point is therefore in Mese near San Vittore; the settlement is reached only after the forest section.

The Albareda–Cigolino–Calones route is rated difficulty level E for hikers; its estimated duration is two hours. It runs from the huts near Albareda along a mule track to the meadows of Cigolino at 1,045 metres, then via Prato Morello at 1,165 metres to Calones at 1,400 metres. The route therefore climbs through several elevations between Albareda, Cigolino, Prato Morello and Calones. On its southbound section, the Dalò–Crespallo–Olcera route passes the huts of Albareda and is 13.5 kilometres long. Its length makes this route relevant as a longer section when planning a day's itinerary.
