Oga: Forte Venini, Church and Mountain Landscape

Oga lies at 1,500 m above sea level amid extensive coniferous forests. The peaks of the Central Alps – Ortler, Gran Zebrù, Tresero, Thurwieser, Cevedale, S. Matteo, Confinale, Reit and Cima Piazzi – surround the village. At the same time, Oga lies on a very sunny viewing balcony overlooking Bormio and Valdidentro. This combines the high altitude with a wide Alpine panorama and a landscape where culture, forest and nature experiences are closely visible side by side.

Forte Venini and the Churches of Oga

An important point of reference for the history of the village is Forte Venini. The fort was equipped with four long-range guns, whose range was approximately 13 km. Extensive restoration returned Forte Venini in Oga to the public in 2003. In autumn 2014, it officially came under the protection and ownership of the municipality of Valdisotto. These stages make the fort an impressive subject for anyone wishing to discover Oga not only through its mountain landscape but also through its past.

The Church of Saints Lorenzo and Colombano also leads into local history. It became the parish church in 1632 and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The present church was built in 1904 in the Neo-Gothic style after a devastating fire destroyed the former medieval chapel. Inside, two precious altar structures dating from 1538 are preserved. Several periods – from the medieval chapel through the parish church to the Neo-Gothic building – come into direct relationship with one another here.

For the feast of Saint Lawrence, the traditional “fiamme di S. Lorenzo” are lit on the natural terrace of Tadè, which overlooks the village. These large bonfires bring a living local tradition to light in a place that also opens up views across Oga. For visitors interested in culture, this custom complements the permanent buildings with a community occasion bearing its own regional character.

Paluaccio di Oga and Nature Around the Village

The Paluaccio di Oga nature reserve covers more than 30 hectares. Its peat bog dates back approximately 13,000 years. The area is also home to the carnivorous plant Drosera rotundifolia. Anyone interested in alpine habitats, wetlands and unusual plants will find here a natural feature with geological depth and a remarkable botanical speciality.

Forest Paths and the Route to Cerdec Hut

Near the village of Le Motte di Oga, on Provincial Road No. 28 between Oga and Le Motte, easy forest paths lead through the mountain landscape. The hike to Cerdec Hut runs through dense forests and green pastures and passes the Cerdec alpine huts. It is considered suitable for the whole family.

The route to Cerdec Hut begins at the car park of Forte di Oga. From there, it follows path N280 towards Crap del Maro, through the centre of Oga and then along path N207. In this way, the route connects the area around the fort, the village itself and the landscape outside the built-up area. Using these paths and landscape sections as points of reference helps you combine nature, village character and a family-friendly hike.
