Sondalo between nature and history

Sondalo combines an alpine landscape with an unusually diverse local history. Part of the municipality lies within Stelvio National Park. At the same time, traces of medical, architectural and everyday history run through the town and its surroundings. Sanatoriums, castles and frescoes

The Museo dei Sanatori di Sondalo documents the history of the sanatoriums built in Valtellina in the 20th century to combat tuberculosis. The tour takes place in the rooms formerly used to admit patients. Since 2010, guided tours of the complex and the park of Villaggio Morelli have been organised in summer with experts in architecture, landscape, art history and forestry.

The Castello di Boffalora is also part of Sondalo's history: in the 13th century, it was the scene of clashes between the Guelph factions of the Torriani family and the Ghibelline Corrado Venosta. In the historic centre stand old, rustic houses with frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. Migiondo, a rural district of Sondalo, offers another perspective on the town's former way of life. There, stone houses, haylofts, stables, manure heaps, washhouses and washhouses, as well as frescoes, preserve links to the former rural way of life.

Trails in Val di Rezzalo

Val di Rezzalo preserves traditional huts made of wood and stone. It offers easy routes for hiking and mountain biking, as well as ski touring in winter. The Sentiero dei Minerali leads through Sondalo's mineralogical heritage; along the route, anatase, tourmalines, zircons, apatites, native arsenic and quartz can be found. The area therefore appeals not only to classic hiking enthusiasts, but also to visitors who want to examine geology and the landscape more closely.

For orientation on a route in Val di Rezzalo, a specific access route is described: shortly after Sondalo, leave the SS38 at Le Prese, follow the signs to Frontale and continue to the village of Fontanaccia. After leaving the car there, an old mule track from the First World War begins. Bus service to Val di Rezzalo has been temporarily suspended due to a landslide.

Sport and regional cuisine

The Cittadella dello Sport offers facilities for football, athletics, tennis, basketball, roller skating, climbing, skateboarding and ice skating in winter. La Miğiondàra offers a culinary perspective: this gastronomic walk through Migiondo combines seasonal local specialities from the region with Valtellina tradition.
