Chiuro combines a landscape shaped by orchards and distinctive vineyard terraces with a historic center filled with sacred buildings. This creates a destination where wine and food culture, art history and hiking experiences can be brought together through specific places and trails.

Historic Center and Sacred Art

Chiuro’s historic center includes the fortified Palazzo of Stefano Milite Quadrio. The Palazzo Quadrio de’ Maria Pontaschelli on Via Borgofrancone has a particularly layered history: construction began in the 16th century, and it was substantially expanded and embellished in the 18th century. Its courtyard contains a rare, well-preserved two-story wooden loggia from an old Valtellina dwelling.

The Oratorio dei Confratelli di Santa Marta also makes a striking impression. It is richly decorated with frescoes and crowned by a distinctive ten-segment dome. The interior of the parish church of Saints James and Andrew combines Baroque design with frescoes in medallions on the barrel vault by Giuseppe Prina.

Other churches complete this picture. The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Maria della Neve e di San Carlo dates from the 17th to the 18th century; its vaults feature three medallions painted by Cesare Ligari in 1767. The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio is a 15th-century building containing fragments of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes.

Next to the parish church is the Portichetto dei Disciplini, which contains frescoes by Cipriano Valorsa and dates from 1563. In the lunette of an archway, a fresco attributed to Cipriano Valorsa depicts a Pietà and Saints James and Andrew. In the hamlet of Castionetto, two engraved prehistoric stelae were also found in 1959 by Maria Reggiani Rajna in a vineyard’s dry-stone wall.

Wine, Crafts and Regional Festivals

The terraced landscape is closely linked to Chiuro’s wine. Many Valtellina wineries are based here and produce Valtellina Superiore DOCG and Sforzato. The wineries in Chiuro welcome visitors by appointment for guided cellar tours. A local craft tradition is the production of Pezzotti valtellinesi, the characteristic rustic rugs of Valtellina.

Events also showcase regional products. Grappolo d'Oro is an event held during the first week of September and dedicated to Valtellina’s red wines. The 2026 edition in Chiuro includes guided tastings and walks through the vineyards. Every year, on the third weekend of July, two evenings honoring bresaola are held at the “La Colonia” sports field.

Hiking Trails and Excursions around Chiuro

The Sentiero del Sole crosses Chiuro from east to west, with several hiking trails branching off from it. The Ponte in Valtellina–Chiuro stage of the Sentieri di Gusto leads along Via Parravicini into Chiuro’s old sacred district. This connects the landscape with the historic buildings in the town without turning the two areas into a single circular route.

The Valle dei Laghi is considered an easily accessible hike and takes its name from the small glacial lakes. The route begins at Alp Pian dei Cavalli and leads to Lac Gelt, where chamois, marmots and rock ptarmigans can be seen. The specific route description makes this excursion particularly interesting for visitors who want to combine a mountain landscape with nature observation.

Several cycling routes run around Chiuro. Above Castionetto di Chiuro, a section of the Sentiero Italia follows a biker-adapted route of the Sentiero del Sole. The Chiuro–Sondrio–Berbenno di Valtellina section of the Via dei Terrazzamenti begins in Chiuro.
