Tresivio: Culture, Calvario and Trails on the Rhaetian Slope

Tresivio between history and high-altitude trails

Tresivio combines impressive evidence of the past with trails through the hillside landscape. Above Prasomaso, the Sentiero del Sole runs through the municipal area. The network of trails enables a continuous crossing of the Rhaetian Slope between Sondrio and Tirano, mostly at elevations between 1,000 and 1,300 metres. Alongside the historic sites, this also places a landscape at the centre of attention that can be experienced over longer stretches of trail.

Another option is the unpaved mule track from Boirolo. It leads to Alpe Rogneda and the municipal mountain huts at 2,200 metres. The trail can be used on foot or by mountain bike; motorised traffic is prohibited. Santa Casa Lauretana and religious heritage

The Santa Casa Lauretana sanctuary was built between 1646 and 1790 as a vow following the plague of 1630. Inside is an 18th-century replica of the Santa Casa of Nazareth. It stands in a large, stucco-decorated display case and contains an image of the Black Madonna. Architecture, religious history and the distinctive interior design come together here directly.

A clearly limited visiting window has been recorded: the Santa Casa sanctuary is open from June to September on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The parish church of Santissimi Pietro e Paolo is open during Mass times. It dates from the 13th century and was later remodelled.

Calvario: procession, trail and panorama

The Chiesetta del Calvario is the destination of a traditional Good Friday procession. It begins at the Santa Casa sanctuary and follows a trail with several stations and iron crosses to the chapel. Calvario thus combines religious tradition with a specific route through Tresivio.

The trail to the Chiesetta del Calvario starts at the ancient Piazza Fontana. In less than 15 minutes, you can reach the top of the Calvario rock, which offers a 360-degree panorama. For planning your day, this short ascent can therefore be combined with the historic sites in the town, without extending the information beyond the stated duration and destination of the trail.

Castello-Calvario di Tresivio is one of the strategically located hilltop settlements overlooking the Valtellina valley. In the Middle Ages, some of these hilltop settlements were resettled with towers or castles. This gives the site a historical dimension that goes beyond individual buildings and points to the former significance of the higher elevations.

Archaeological traces and rural building culture

Among the notable archaeological remains is the Stele di Tresivio. It is a stele bearing Rhaetian writing and was found in Tresivio on 31 March 1851. The Stele di Tresivio is considered one of the archaeologically and historically most significant discoveries in the entire Alpine region.

The rural settlement centre of S. Antonio also preserves an informative glimpse into traditional buildings. The ground floor contains stables, the first floor living quarters and the attic a hayloft. This spatial arrangement makes it immediately clear how living and agricultural use were interconnected within the buildings.
