Vergiate combines wooded landscapes, Lago di Comabbio and various examples of sacred and artistic culture. If you would like to combine nature trails, waterscapes and historic sites in a single trip, you can plan your days here around different interests.

Forests and Lago di Comabbio

The Monte San Giacomo nature reserve and nearby Monte Vigano are completely covered by well-preserved forests of Scots pine and chestnut trees. Numerous trails cross the Monte San Giacomo nature reserve and connect San Giacomo with the Bosco delle Capre in Vergiate. This gives you a clear focus on wooded landscapes and trails, without reducing the natural setting to a single viewpoint.

Lago di Comabbio is a glacial lake covering an area of 4 km². A ban on motorboats contributes to its rich wildlife and plant life. Rowing is one of the recreational activities available on Lago di Comabbio. There is also a rowing centre on the shore at Corgeno, with a competition course used at national and international level. The lake, its shores and rowing therefore form a distinct part of trip planning.

Trails by the lake and Monte San Giacomo

The cycling and pedestrian path Pista ciclopedonale del Lago di Comabbio runs around the lake through forests and reed beds. In addition, the hike on Monte San Giacomo returns to the Ornitological Trail. The two trail descriptions place different emphasis: here, the focus is on the loop through the lakeside landscape, while there it is on the hike through the natural environment of Monte San Giacomo.

When choosing your hotel in Vergiate, you can tailor your daily plans to your own priorities. Forest trails, reed beds and Lago di Comabbio suit a stay focused on nature and outdoor activities; churches, frescoes and murals provide a cultural focus. This allows your choice of accommodation to match your desired travel rhythm, without standardising the character of the individual places.

Churches, frescoes and murals

In Corgeno, the Chiesa di San Giorgio preserves a Romanesque bell tower built by the Maestri Comacini. The Chiesa di San Martino Cimbro preserves an 18th-century portico. In the historic centre of Vergiate stands the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, a single-nave church dating from the 14th century.

The sacred history of Sesona also reaches far back: the Chiesa di Sant’Eusebio was built in the 14th century. Its interior contains several frescoes by Appiani. The Chiesa di San Gallo preserves medieval frescoes, adding another art-historical aspect to the area’s ecclesiastical heritage.

More modern and immediately pictorial are the two murals. The Murale di Cimbro depicts Paul Cézanne’s work „The Card Players“, while the Murale di Vergiate depicts Claude Monet’s work „Woman with a Parasol“. In Corgeno, the Atelier Mario da Corgeno is connected with the open-air museum Giardino dell’Anima di Mario. The open-air museum lies along the cycling path by Lago di Comabbio between kilometres 8 and 9.

The local character also includes the antico lavatoio di Cuirone, regarded as a lasting symbol of the village of Cuirone. The cultural spectrum thus extends from Romanesque and medieval traces, through churches from the 14th and 18th centuries, to murals and a village site of remembrance.
