Santa Maria delle Moie and Sacred Art

Moie is home to Santa Maria delle Moie Abbey, one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the Marche. The abbey was founded by Benedictine monks and probably built in the first decades of the 12th century. Its location near the Esino River is just as much part of its traditional history as its original surroundings in a wooded area.

In the central apse of the church’s right side aisle is a 16th-century fresco depicting Saint Anthony the Great. The church also contains an 18th-century oil painting of the Madonna della Misericordia, which is regarded as Moie’s patronal image. Sacred art therefore provides a distinct focus for your stay in Moie.

From Brickworks to Cultural Venue

Biblioteca La Fornace is a public library in Moie. It opened in 2007 after a brickworks that had operated until 1966 was repurposed. The former brickworks building now serves as a cultural centre called eFFeMMe23. The transformation of the former industrial building illustrates how Moie combines its architectural heritage with cultural use.

The Moie brickworks is an important example of industrial archaeology in the Vallesina and a place of the region’s social and historical memory. Its former chimney is also part of the townscape: it is a prominent landmark and visible from every point in the town. This relic therefore provides a clearly recognisable point of reference for finding your way around Moie.

On the Via dei Tesori

The Via dei Tesori is an 11 km cycling and hiking trail from Moie to Jesi that follows the Esino River. Depending on distance, direction and whether the route climbs or descends, the network offers different routes. The trail can therefore be considered from different physical and time perspectives depending on the tour you want, without Moie losing its cultural character.

The Via dei Tesori also includes parking, refreshment and meeting points, as well as access from the provincial road. One section runs from the Moie expressway exit to Castelplanio. This creates a network of paths for you that brings together different sections and orientation options around Moie.

Moie’s patronal festival is celebrated on 8 September. Together with Santa Maria delle Moie Abbey, the sacred artworks, the former brickworks and the Via dei Tesori, this creates a destination that combines cultural history and activity in a single stay.
