Discover Monterado: Castello, Park and History

Monterado combines a multifaceted history with distinctive architecture and landscaped green spaces. At its heart is the Castello Cinciari, built in 1742 on the ruins of Monterado’s historic centre from the Malatesta period. The neoclassical building directly anchors several eras in the townscape. The present form of the Castello di Monterado was designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli. Those interested in Italian architectural history will therefore find tangible traces here ranging from the medieval background to neoclassical design.

History from the First Settlement Traces to the Present Day

The first evidence of Monterado as a settlement centre dates from the mid-13th century. At that time, monks from Fonte Avellana made the area arable and established the pievania. The archaeological finds in the Ripabianca area date back even further: they attest to human settlement since the Middle Neolithic. Together with the Castello, they form a historical arc that does not begin with a single construction phase but reaches back to the area’s early settlement history.

Monterado’s sacred architecture includes San Giacomo Maggiore, a church completed in 1870 with a hexagonal floor plan. San Giacomo Maggiore is also home to the sculpture La Resurrezione. The contemporary artist Leandro Memè donated it for the 2000 jubilee celebrations. The church, sculpture and Castello each add different temporal and artistic accents that can be connected during a culturally focused exploration of the town.

Park and Italian Garden at the Castello

The park surrounding the Castello di Monterado covers around seven hectares and features shady paths for walks in nature. This outdoor area is complemented by the Italian garden of the Castello di Monterado. There you will find roses, other flower beds and large Lebanon cedars. The paths and garden also make the Castello grounds interesting for travellers who want to appreciate the landscaped surroundings as well as historic buildings. Walks can thus be combined with views of the architecture, plants and layout of the park.
