Discover Campofilone: History, Cuisine and Coast
Campofilone combines a historic centre surrounded by massive walls with a short, tree-lined avenue providing access, as well as a distinctive culinary and coastal character. If you would like to consider history, regional specialities and beach activities together for your trip to Italy, the town offers several clearly distinct themes for this.
Medieval Traces and Sacred Spaces
One of the notable structures is the Porta da Sole. It was built at the beginning of the 11th century and served throughout the entire High Middle Ages as the main entrance to the castle of Campofilone. The Porta da Bora has retained its original function as an entrance to Campofilone, thereby complementing the image of the historic town.
The Oratorio della Pietà also recounts Campofilone’s religious history. A group of local brotherhood members founded it on 5 October 1715; the group was affiliated with the Confraternita dei Fiorentini in Rome. The Oratorio also contains statues of saints and a large papier-mâché Christ, created at the end of the 19th century.
The Musei Parrocchiali bring together different historical themes. The Museo Liturgico preserves liturgical vestments and sacred objects from the 16th to the 19th century. The Museo Archeologico displays Picenian finds from the 8th to the 4th century BC, as well as Roman remains from villas. In the cloister of the abbey at the Musei Parrocchiali, a Roman cistern has been preserved that was used for centuries by Benedictine monks as an icehouse.
Southeast of Campofilone lies the Granaio Romano, about 300 metres from the Borgo. The underground Roman structure is made of pozzolanic concrete and comprises two large rectangular rooms with barrel vaults. In the Sala degli Stemmi of the Abbazia di San Bartolomeo, fully executed frescoes depict the history of the abbey and the monastic community. The walls also display the coats of arms of the commendatory abbots who succeeded one another from 1564 onwards, as well as depictions of views of Campofilone.
The Teatro Comunale preserves an image of the god Apollo painted on the ceiling by Nicola Achilli. It also features dolphin-shaped chandeliers by the metalwork artist Aris Ficiarà . Campofilone’s cultural character thus extends from medieval gates and sacred collections to artistic details in the theatre.
Maccheroncini and Local Tradition
Maccheroncini di Campofilone received European recognition in 2013 as a protected geographical indication (IGP). The first craft workshop for their production was established in the historic centre opposite the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo. The Sagra Nazionale dei Maccheroncini di Campofilone has been documented since 1964 and is associated with the first third of August; there, Maccheroncini are offered for tasting with traditional, rich meat ragù.
Beach, Water and Coastal Cycle Path
The beach of Campofilone stretches for more than 1.5 kilometres between the localities of Tre Camini and Ponte Nina. Its character varies between fine sand, shallow water, pebbly sections and broad open spaces. Stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, beach volleyball and sunset yoga are available on the beach.
A modern cycle path along the coast of Campofilone connects Marina di Campofilone with Pedaso and Marina di Altidona. For further regional orientation, there is also the Ecomuseo della Valle dell’Aso e delle sue identità association: its headquarters are located in Campofilone in the Palazzo Morelli/Astorri.
