Magliano di Tenna: Medieval Center and Rural Culture

The fortifications, churches and museum combine architectural history with rural everyday culture. The historic center preserves large parts of the ring wall and two of the six original towers. The Porta da Bora is an old fortified entrance to the castle of Magliano di Tenna; its original construction is generally dated to around the 13th century. The Torre da Sole is also known as the Torre del Sud and, alongside the Porta da Bora, is the second remaining visible and preserved tower of the fortifications.

The Church of San Gregorio Magno stands in the old town and was built in the 18th century on the remains of an earlier Farfa settlement. It preserves a fresco from the late 15th century attributed to Vincenzo Pagani. The Church of Madonna delle Grazie includes a 15th-century votive chapel with frescoes attributed to Pierpalma da Fermo. San Filippo Neri is also home to the tomb monument of the architect Giovanbattista Carducci, which was executed in 1919 by the sculptor Salomoni according to Carducci’s design.

The Church of Madonna di Loreto is another of Magliano di Tenna’s sights. The Torre da Bora is considered an important testimony to the history of fortified architecture in the Marche. In the Torrione on Piazza Gramsci, the Museo della Civiltà Contadina gives visitors an insight into rural work and life in the countryside.

The patron saint’s festival, Festa del patrono, takes place in Magliano di Tenna every year around September 3, the feast day of Saint Gregory. Another local summer event is the Giochi tra Contrade.
