Montefortino among Gorges, Churches and Local Cuisine

Montefortino is a destination for travelers who want to combine nature, sacred history and regional cuisine in a mountain setting. The Gole dell'Infernaccio, several religious sites, museums and two traditional dishes offer you different starting points for planning your trip.

Natural Landscapes between the Monti Sibillini

One defining natural area is the Gole dell'Infernaccio. They are located in Monti Sibillini National Park within the municipality of Montefortino. The Tenna River formed the gorge between Monte Sibilla and Monte Priora. At the entrance, the Pisciarelle waterfalls cascade down the slopes of Monte Zampa in a curtain of droplets. The Eremo di San Leonardo al Volubrio can be reached after about an hour on foot through the gorge. Montefortino is also part of the Zona Speciale di Conservazione “Valle dell'Infernaccio - Monte Sibilla”, a protected area covering 3,415 hectares and located entirely within Monti Sibillini National Park, which also extends across Montemonaco and Castelsantangelo sul Nera.

Culture, Museum and Medieval Traces

The town's cultural history can also be discovered at specific sites. The Pinacoteca Civica Fortunato Duranti was founded in 1842 after Fortunato Duranti donated his collection to the municipality. The Porta di Valle (Porta di Vetice) is documented as early as the 13th century. Next to the gate is a viewing balcony overlooking the Sibillini Mountains. In the Palazzo Leopardi, the Museo faunistico dei Monti Sibillini contains a collection of around 1,300 specimens in total, including mammals and birds from the Italian fauna as well as animals from abroad.

Sacred Sites and Traditional History

The Pieve di Sant'Angelo in Montespino has been documented since January 977 and corresponds to the Romanesque church of the same name on Montespino. The Santuario della Madonna dell'Ambro is located at an altitude of 658 meters between Monte Priora and Monte Castel Manardo. The sanctuary is associated with the traditional story of the apparition to Santina, a girl who had been deaf and mute from birth. The church of the Santuario has a ramp for people with disabilities. The Eremo di San Leonardo al Volubrio was an ancient Benedictine priory.

Local Cuisine from the Farming Tradition

Montefortino's culinary offerings include dishes with a clear regional connection. Cucciole in porchetta is a traditional dish from Montefortino made with land snails, garlic, wild fennel, chili peppers and peeled tomatoes. ’Ngriccio is a symbolic soup of Montefortino's cuisine, rooted in the farming tradition of the Marche hinterland.
