Montefalcone Appennino: Rocky Ridge, Museums and Paths through Nature

In its historic center, Montefalcone Appennino appears as an elevated village set in a distinctive landscape. The center lies 758 meters above sea level on a rocky ridge and high limestone cliffs. From here, there are panoramic views across the Aso Valley. Anyone wishing to combine historic townscapes with expansive landscape views on a trip to Italy will find a clear starting point for exploring the village.

Nature among limestone slopes and ancient beech trees

The CEA Montefalcone lies at the heart of the SIC “Montefalcone Appennino-Smerillo” and the protected floristic area “Bosco di Smerillo e Montefalcone”. Wild orchids bloom on Montefalcone’s cool limestone slopes from late April to early summer. They include Orchis mascula, Ophrys apifera and Anacamptis morio. The season is therefore particularly interesting if you would like to consciously include plants and characteristic landscapes in your trip.

The area around Montefalcone Appennino also offers natural features with a character of their own: ancient beech trees grow there, and a monumental beech can be reached via a short walk. The Giardino Tronelli adds a small park in Palazzo Felici to these landscape experiences. Its winding paths descend along the cliff of Monte Falcone.

Art, museums and historic spaces

Palazzo Felici is a 17th-century building and houses the Alamanno Museum. It contains a monumental polyptych by Pietro Alamanno, painted between 1475 and 1480. The Civic Museum of Fossils and Minerals has more than 1,200 minerals and displays local finds from the Lower Pliocene as well as fossils from around the world. The museum’s offerings include educational activities in the museum, in the local fossil sites and on the nature trails of Bosco del Monte Falcone.

Further historic sites add to the cultural picture. The Church of San Pietro in Penne is flanked by well-kept gardens and has a balcony overlooking the cliff. The castle has a six-story keep and a panoramic terrace that served defensive and observation functions. The Teatro del Falco, with 69 seats, a gallery and excellent acoustics, is available for events and performances.

The Convento di San Giovanni in Selva dates back to the 9th century and was established as a foundation of Farfa Abbey. It was renovated in the 18th century. The complex includes a cloister with a central fountain and a church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, with a wooden choir dating from 1805.

Routes for hiking, cycling and faith

The Fossil Route begins at Monte Falcone and runs along the rocky ridge through fossil-bearing strata, natural cavities and terraced gardens. It then continues along paths where wooded sections alternate with bright viewpoints. In this way, the route combines geological themes with changing landscapes, without limiting the individual stops to a single type of experience.

There is also an official e-bike route for cycling. It begins in the historic center and follows gravel roads and scenic stretches. Stage 15 of the Cammino dei Cappuccini runs between Montefalcone Appennino and Rotella. It is about 20 kilometers long and passes through mountain and hilly landscapes, along gravel roads, nature trails and some paved sections.

The official religious route “Tra cielo e silenzio: passi di fede nell’antico bosco” begins at Montefalcone’s historic churches. It leads through places of worship to the Convento di San Giovanni in Selva. Another historic point of reference is the road tunnel dating from 1837, considered a historic road construction that connects valleys with one another.

An event in early October

If you would like to combine the regional atmosphere with a set event date, Sapori d’Autunno is one of the village’s notable occasions. The event takes place every year in the first days of October. Together with the museums, historic buildings and routes, this creates a destination whose focus can be tailored to different interests.
