Historic Traces Between Walls and Valleys

Sant'Elpidio Morico combines medieval history with aspects of regional culture and a cycling tour through the surrounding area. The settlement was established on a Picenian-Roman foundation. Large sections of the medieval walls have been preserved on the southern and western sides. In the Middle Ages, Sant'Elpidio Morico emerged as a castrum for monitoring the routes between the Tenna and Aso valleys. There was also a craft tradition of producing ceramics and terracotta in the area around Sant'Elpidio Morico.

The Chiesa di San Paolo is a Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. The façade of the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is neoclassical; the church dates from the 17th century.

Sant'Elpidio Abate and Local History

The former church of Sant'Elpidio Abate was probably built at the beginning of the 11th century and was already mentioned in the Regesto di Farfa before 1030. Between 1285 and 1424, it was relocated within the castle walls. The collegiate church of Sant'Elpidio Abate was consecrated on November 4, 1424. In 1591, the church was elevated to a collegiate church at the request of the local community.

The town's political history also extends over several centuries. In the 13th century, Sant'Elpidio Morico apparently came under the control of Farfa Abbey. In the 14th century, the town was conquered by Rainaldo di Monteverde and the mercenary captain Azzo degli Ubaldini. Carlo Malatesta besieged and conquered Sant'Elpidio Morico in April 1415.

Vittore Crivelli's triptych was painted in 1496 for the Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo in Sant'Elpidio Morico. It is now located in the Diocesan Museum in Fermo; the original frame is still in Monsampietro.

A Cycling Tour with Gentle Climbs

The “Two Castles, One Valley” cycling tour leads from the walls of Monsampietro Morico to the hamlet of Sant'Elpidio Morico. It follows scenic roads with gentle ascents and descents and no demanding changes in elevation. The tour is suitable for e-bikes and gravel bikes. Olive groves and vineyards line the route, with the silhouette of a castle appearing along the way.

Local Festival Culture and Paths Through the Landscape

The Sagra dello Spiedino is a recurring event in Sant'Elpidio Morico. At the festival, food stalls offer skewers for tasting. The 42nd Sagra dello Spiedino was held in Sant'Elpidio Morico and organized by the Pro Loco of Monsampietro Morico.

The Vitalbero hiking trail near Sant'Elpidio Morico follows an unpaved white road. The name of this road derives from grapevines that grew up trees. The surface is therefore a separate consideration when planning your own route: anyone including the trail in their plans should take the unpaved white road into account when choosing equipment and should not equate it with a paved road through a town.
