Francavilla d’Ete lies in a hilly landscape that slopes down towards the sea in the east and merges into the Sibillini mountain range in the west. This contrast is particularly vivid in Piazza Marconi: because of its panoramic views over the surrounding landscape, it is known as the “Balcone dei Sibillini”. From here, the view stretches eastwards to the Adriatic and westwards to the Sibillini Mountains. This creates a clear landscape framework for you, in which historic local details and expansive views come together.

Art and history in the townscape

Francavilla d’Ete is home to several tangible examples of architecture, art and local history. The Church of San Rocco di Montpellier was extensively remodelled in 1936, but retains an original moulded and framed portal. The church contains a fresco by Pagani as well as the work La Crocifissione by an unknown artist. Santa Maria delle Grazie contains the 16th-century fresco Madonna con il Bambino e Santi, attributed to the local school. The parish church of San Pietro was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in the 19th century.

The Palazzo Comunale town hall on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II contains one of the six towers of the Castello, which dates back to 1140. Above the south gate of the main square is the Orologio Comunale; an iron frame there supports two bells for the hours and quarter-hours. Via Donato Bramante preserves the memory of Francavilla d’Ete’s first settlement outside the medieval castle. Even today, the town’s most important local processions pass along this street. The founding document of the brotherhood from 1690 is preserved in the Oratorio della Confraternita del Carmine.

Wine, festivals and local traditions

Local festival culture includes Lu Vurgu fa Cantina, which began as a wine festival in September 2001 on a street in Francavilla that has traditionally been known locally as “lu vurgu”, meaning “the Borgo”. The event later expanded to include squares and other streets; food stalls and wine cellars are spread throughout the historic centre. The Sagra della Pizza is associated with the first week of July and includes a series of dialect theatre performances and folk dances. The patronal festival Festa del Patrono San Rocco has been part of Francavilla d’Ete’s summer programme for two decades. La Notte dell’Orgoglio Marchigiano has reached its 24th edition.

Walks and getting your bearings locally

There are also specific points of reference for different ways of exploring the town. The Parco Pubblico is accessible on foot and by bicycle via a paved road. Francavilla has two cycle-friendly establishments where cyclists can obtain refreshments and technical assistance. As part of SmartVillage 2.0, a guided walk through the Borgo of Francavilla d’Ete was offered to participants from the municipalities involved in the project. This allows art, local history, festivals, cycling and the landscape to be considered as different focal points when planning your trip.
