Montegiorgio combines a historic town centre with art, crafts, regional cuisine and trails through Piane di Montegiorgio. This makes the town interesting for you if, on a trip to Italy, you do not want to separate culture from the landscape and the flavours of everyday life. The medieval urban structure follows the course of three slopes of the hill on which Montegiorgio stands. From the Pincio, the panoramic view stretches from the Adriatic Sea to the Sibillini Mountains.

Historic Centre, Art and Crafts

Montegiorgio’s cultural sites include the Teatro Domenico Alaleona, a Neoclassical theatre with white-and-gold stucco decorations and ceiling paintings, as well as the Monumento ai Caduti on Piazza Alaleona. The monument consists of a bronze statue of an infantry soldier on a stepped square marble pedestal and is attributed to Gaetano Orsolini.

The Church of San Francesco, formerly Santa Maria Grande, was originally built around the year 1000. Attached to it is the Cappella Farfense, which contains a fresco cycle attributed to Antonio Alberti of Ferrara and depicting the Invention of the Cross. For your planning, it is important to note that San Francesco and the attached Cappella Farfense could not be visited because of the damage caused by the 2016 earthquake. Sant’Andrea is also home to the Madonna dell’Umiltà, a tempera painting on a wooden panel from 1374 by Francescuccio Ghissi.

The town’s artisan character is reflected in Legatoria Ars Antiqua, run by bookbinder Maria Letizia Ranucci, and the Antica Bottega di Indoratura e Restauro. Ars Antiqua creates unique works from reused and high-quality materials, including pieces made using the paper collage technique. The Antica Bottega preserves a seven-generation tradition of gilding on wood that dates back to the early years of the 19th century and uses traditional medieval techniques.

Trails, Events and Local Cuisine

Another side of Montegiorgio is represented by the Ippodromo San Paolo: the trotting track has a 1,190-metre-long racing circuit. In Piane di Montegiorgio, a hiking trail begins at the Church of S. Angelo in Montiliano and ends at the mill. The route is approximately 6 kilometres long, takes about 3 hours and has a low level of difficulty. In addition, a historical and nature walk is organised in Piane on the first Sunday in May and the last Sunday in November, leading to archaeological sites, along the Tenna River and to the Cascades di Sasso.

For more than 300 years, Montegiorgio has held the traditional Fiera de lu succursu every year in November, on the Sunday close to 21 November. Li caciu’ de Muntijorgio is recognised as a municipal De.Co. product and as a traditional sweet; its production and consumption were part of the entire local community. Local cuisine includes Vincisgrassi, Ciauscolo, artisanally produced cured meats and Pecorino cheese.
